Why'd we put EQ on IR with an ankle sprain? :|

Too many good WRs and players in other positions to keep. Needed his roster spot. We have plenty of WRs to replace his potential level of production this year.

By IR him we have a ready-made replacement for Geronimo when he hits free agency next year.

Did a quick reading:

"When a non-vested player (someone with less than four years of experience) gets cut, he is subjected to waivers, which gives every team 24 hours to claim him. The player becomes a free agent if he is not claimed on waivers. When a vested veteran is cut (released) in the preseason, he can immediately sign with any team."

This does not apply to Bolton

"*Vested veterans can be put directly on injured reserve without being exposed to waivers."

This does not apply to Bolton

" injured non-vested players must be placed on waivers through the waived/injured designation before being placed on injured reserve. This prevents teams from stashing young players on injured reserve. Once a waived/injured player clears waivers, he reverts to the team's IR."

This applies to Bolton

"*After a player is waived/injured, the player and the team have five days to agree to an injury settlement. An injury settlement is designed for a team to pay the player for the time he is expected to miss with the injury.

If a settlement is reached, the player becomes a free agent and can sign with another team immediately. If a settlement is not reached, the player goes on the team's injured reserve. A player on IR can't be waived until he passes a physical.

*In the case of a short-term injury, it's typically in the best interest of both the team and the player to come to an injury agreement.

With a settlement, the team can pay a lump sum to cover the weeks the player will miss due to injury and then cut the player. If the player remains on the injured reserve, the team is responsible for paying his salary each week.

For the player, a settlement allows him to collect compensation for his injury while also immediately seeking opportunities with other teams.

*An injury settlement doesn't automatically occur. If the player suffers a long-term injury, he would have little incentive to pursue an injury settlement. And if a player is in a team's future plans, the team would likely keep the player on injured reserve.

Sometimes the sides just can't reach a settlement. In those cases, the player would be placed on injured reserve and likely waived once he passes his physical.

*In the past, teams weren't able to re-sign waived/injured players until the injury settlement time period plus six additional weeks passed. But a new rule instituted this preseason has reduced the waiting period to the injury settlement time period plus three additional weeks before a team can re-sign a played that was waived/injured."

This might apply to Bolton but I would be surprised if we did this, much more likely we're will attempt to put him on IR.

So basically EQ is a veteran which is why we can put him straight on IR but Bolton is a rookie and we cannot do this. We literally had no choice but to waive him unless we put him on the 53 first. I would've done this - seems needlessly risky what the team is doing.

Awww I was curious how eq could be put on.

Actually EQ has less than 4 years experience so he should be exposed to waivers before we IR him. Im not sure how we managed to skip that process.

Yet for Bolton he has to go through waivers. Confusing.

By keeping him in the 53 until the first day of the season.

Those are only the rules for preseason.

Its official:

So EQ eligible 2nd half of season.

McCray traded for undisclosed 2020 pick swap (aka whoever has the higher 7th, we get it).

QB Rodgers, Boyle

RB Jones, J Williams, D Williams

FB Vitale

WR Adams, Allison, Valdez-Scantling, Kumerow, Davis, Shepherd, IR St. Brown

TE Graham, Lewis, Tonyan, Sternberger

LT Bakhtiari, Light

LG Taylor, Jenkins

C Linsley, Patrick

RG Turner, Madison

RT Bulaga

DL Clark, Lowry, Adams, Lancaster, Keke, Brown

LB Z. Smith, Martinez, Burks, P. Smith, Gary, Fackrell, Crawford, Summers

CB Alexander, King, T. Williams, Jackson, Brown, Hollman, Sullivan

S Amos, Savage, Greene, Redmond, PUP Campbell

ST Crosby, Scott, Bradley

Cut Fadol Brown to make room for someone who can play ILB. Don't think that problem goes away the way Burks is.

Darrius Shepherd and Trevor Davis are the same guy. No need to keep both.

I think he is eligible to start practicing after week 6 and return in week 8. High ankle sprains can be slow to heal, but if he heals fast I hope to see him playing this season.

Yeah that's what I was thinking right after I posted. Distracted with someone talking in my ear.

This is my understanding: we put EQ on IR today. That means he can’t return this year. We waived Bolton so that when he’s healthy he can return, but we don’t have to keep him on the 53 to start the year.

Okay so you can push guys straight to IR? I thought we stopped that to prevent stashing?

I've never understood this line of thinking. I've heard it used with other players as well (i.e., Kumerow/Allison). It's not like they are going to be on the field at the same time, and even if they were, why would that be a problem if there were no better players available?

No he's not. He is out for the entire season without any designation to recall him back.

Edit: He has to be on the final 53 and THEN he can be placed on IR in order to be able to recall him back later in the season. It doesn't appear we done this.
