The Chicago Bears and GM Ryan Pace are in the midst of cutting the roster from 90 to 53 players, and must do so by Saturday’s 4:00 p.m. EST deadline.

So far, 12 players have been informed they haven’t made the team. They are:

WR Tanner Gentry
WR Marvin Hall
TE Ian Bunting
OL Marquez Tucker
OL Joe Lowery
NT Daryle Banfield
DE Jalen Dalton
ILB Jameer Thurman
OLB Matt Betts
OLB Chuck Harris
CB Doyin Jibowu
S Clifton Duck

The most surprising name from this list is Hall, who appeared to play well enough in training camp and the preseason to earn the seventh WR spot. His departure suggests Pace will use that roster spot at a different position, perhaps tight end or running back.

One player who isn’t on the roster bubble is K Eddy Pineiro, who by all accounts has secured the starting job for Week 1 against the Packers.

We’ll continue updating the Bears’ final roster as more transactions are announced.

Buh bye Tanner Gentry.....we hardly knew ye'. sad0049.gifLOL

My guess is he'll sign on somewhere.  He's just good enough to be a 4th or 5th WR for someone who needs help.

Anyone surprised Bunting was cut?

Did Horsted play well enough to ace him out or will both end up on the PS?

Later news on TE position:

Bears will keep 4 tight ends on roster

The tight end position has been a focal point throughout training camp, whether it was injury concerns with Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen or a position battle for what was potentially a fourth roster spot.

The Bears will indeed keep four tight ends on the roster in Burton, Shaheen, Ben Braunecker and Bradley Sowell, according to NBC Sports Chicago.

Undrafted rookies Dax Raymond, Ian Bunting, Jesper Horsted and Ellis Richardson were all waived.

Burton, Shaheen and Braunecker were all considered locks for the roster. The battle got interesting between Sowell, Raymond, Bunting and Horsted.

Burton gets the start in the “U” (move) position, with Braunecker backing him up. While Shaheen will occupy the “Y” (in-line) position, where Sowell will back him up.

Sowell converted from offensive tackle to tight end this offseason, thanks to Matt Nagy’s creativity. It was also a result of concern about depth behind Shaheen (“Y” position) and Sowell’s two-yard touchdown reception against the Rams.

The Bears could still add another tight end to the mix as players become available on the waiver wire or sign some to the practice squad.

Jesper Horstead might be the best name in football

LOL.....it's almost a throwback name like something from the '20s or '30s.

Regardless, I'd like to see him on the PS.  He's very similar to Burton as a Move TE type.

Houston is trying to trade Jadeveon Clowney.  In talks with Miami but Clowney says he's adamant about not playing there.

He's a pricey dude but anyone believe Pace may be thinking about him as a hedge against Floyd not continuing to ascend or not being able to sign him next spring?  Or is the guy not a fit here personality wise?

With an extension that reduces his 2019 cap hit the cap cost would be less of a concern than the cost of the trade but if Houston can't get him to play now they'll lose him in FA next spring and get nothing for him unless it's a comp pick.

I've thought about this, # 1 you cant reduce his cap hit.  He is a franchised player and the deadline to extend a tagged player has passed.  You have to live with his $15M guaranteed hit for 2019 no matter what.  That's a steep hit and would eat up almost all of the remaining money for 2019.  On top of that you cant even talk extension until the year is over.  He is going to demand somewhere around Frank Clark money in a new deal.  If Pace really wanted to do that deal, you would almost have to include Floyd in the trade in order to help offset costs.  Then you lose that control for next year too.
