MacReady
https://www.nj.com/giants/2019/09/giants-release-former-starting-lb-bj-goodson-what-surprising-cut-means.html Quote After initially waiving inside linebacker B.J. Goodson, the Giants decided to trade him to the Green Bay Packers on Monday morning. News of Goodson’s initial release was first reported by Jordan Raanan of ESPN. Goodson started 13 games for the Giants in 2018 and 20 over the past two seasons, producing 114 total tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups over that span. However, Goodson’s release shouldn’t be too shocking after he seemed to tumble down the depth chart this summer. At times during practice, he was running with the third or even fourth-team defenses. With the Giants spending much of their time in the nickel defense, Tae Davis took a majority of snaps alongside inside linebacker Alec Ogletree. Likewise, Goodson saw significant playing time in the preseason finale against the New England Patriots, a contest that is typically reserved for players on the roster bubble with the starters on the sideline in proverbial bubble wrap. Moving on from Goodson, a three-year veteran, eight days before the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys signals that the Giants are confident in fifth-round rookie Ryan Connelly. In all likelihood, the Giants will open the season with Ogletree and Davis as the starting inside linebackers, with Connelly also getting some snaps. Inside linebacker is also one of the thinnest positions on the Giants’ depth chart. Goodson finished the preseason with 14 tackles and one sack. Leader
Ross Uglem: He won't revolutionize the defense, and I don't love him as a coverage guy but he's an awesome tackler. 539 snaps last year and five missed tackles. Going to do what he's asked on early downs, play-in, play-out.
Packerraymond
This is your Ryan/Morrison player. Glad we have one, don't know if he'll be ready for Thursday night but this is the depth we needed. We have the Ravens 7th (Montgomery), Titans (Gilbert) and our own, as well as the ability to swap any of those with Cleveland if theirs is a better pick. Odds are we gave up one of those.
Greg C.
We start the season against two teams that like to run the ball, so my guess is that they get him on the field as quickly as possible, but just on early downs and in short yardage situations. craig
Guesses as to whom he replaces? I'll guess: Crawford > Shepherd > Redmond > Madison > Burks-to-IR > Fadol, but no idea really.
Leader
Ross Uglem: More athletic (than Morrision), won't hit as hard, better in coverage (still not great). Goodson a better player, for sure. Average NFL starting linebacker, which Morrison was not.
boratt
Packers really did need the depth. Martinez is good Greene is a nice hybrid piece but he’s also our #3 safety. If Greene, Savage or Amos got injured, we lose that hybrid piece. That’s dangerously thin when you consider one of them is likely to get injured at some point. Burks is.... injured and barely serviceable as far as we know Summers is a rookie who’s not ready and might never be Crawford is.... bad

boratt
Before Goodson we were literally one injury away from Redmond starting at safety or Summers at ILB depending on how you slide the pieces. Props to Gute for planning ahead. Edited September 2, 2019 by boratt
PossibleCabbage
There exist situations where you would rather have Goodson on the field than an extra DB, so I guess it makes sense.

Absolutely. And imagine one injury happening at safety or ILB. It makes a lot more sense if you’re planning on having depth to handle at least one injury
ReadyToThump
I would just like to add the BJ Goodson has a Madden rating of 69. David Bahktiari approves of this trade.
mikebpackfan
I would also like to add that remember when AJ Hawk flipped the 'bird' to the sideline because his name was Hawk? What kind of gesture will this guy make to the sidelines?

He plays with this wide base and chops his feet, always moving, always head up looking for the play— he is... dah dah dahhhh... inevitable. He doesn’t seem fast or quick, he just never stops moving in the right direction. (In the highlights, I get that.) If he would hold his arms straight out he would look like a player from that vibrating football game we used to play in the 1960s after all us farm kids got lectricity in the house up from the poles down at the road.
