Recommended Posts

I don't watch as much college football as I used to. But any players that you guys watch that might be a solid draft pick please put in this thread. I will be relying on you guys to keep me updated.

I honestly don't know what our needs would be.

QB - No (at least not high, back up - yes)

RB - No (maybe a #3)

FB - Sure, but not high.

WR - No. Maybe a #3/4 for the future.

TE - Fine. But I hate drafting TE's early.

OT - No. Maybe a swing tackle?

OG - No. Maybe a back-up?

C - No. Maybe a back-up?

...so offensively early we should maybe target a TE. MAYBE.

LB - No. Unless you want Lee's replacement. But we run a lot of nickles. Back-up is fine.

DE - I mean, sure. But it is not a "NEED".

DT - Giddy Up. I am down for this.

CB - Maybe with jones leaving? But if we re-sign him then no.

S - Maybe. Def a back-up. Maybe a starter.

....so defensively, focus on the trenches? Okay.

K - Yes, but UDFA please.

P - Yes, but UDFA please.

LS - Yes.

Overall...we really just need to do BPA.

BPA regardless of position will be fine. besides what doesn't seem like a need now may reverse by next year.

Everyone will agree BPA is the way to go. Our needs should be OT, CB, S, DT, K, WR, LB, RB in that order.

We really don’t have any glaring weaknesses...really depends on what we do with guys like Crawford, Collins, and Jones and how Jarwin, Schultz look.

DE is a glaring need. Quinn is a 1 year rental. Crawford should be playing his last year. Taco is a healthy scratch week 1. We need someone opposite DLaw for the now and future.

Safety is a need, until we know for sure D.Wilson is the answer. Because as it stands Jeff Heath is one if the worst starters in the league.

TE is a need. Witten is Jerry's age.

QB needs to be drafted every other year, and we didn't get one last year.

OL needs to be drafted every year

Same with DL

If its not an immediate need then draft for "what will" be a need.

I always like to hear about good quarterbacks regardless of need. Drafting one may lead us to be able to trade for many more draft picks down the road anyhow if a true stud Falls in our laps

I also agree with Daboys, a good DE can be a game changer. .. since we are so deep currently maybe a trade up for a real stud could be the difference of winning or losing a Superbowl

Agree with everything here, with an emphasis on DE.

Exactly. Maintain the pipeline. If expiring contracts are on the horizon and we know the player will be too expensive to retain 2 years from now, draft their replacement.

That is what Belichick does.

For a decent rough look at the "what will be a need" see the table below.

My opinions, in order of positions most likely to be drafted early:

  • Cornerback is riddled with question marks over the next couple of years and the 2020 CB draft crop is supposed to be really good. I'd be surprised if we don't take a corner early, even if we do re-sign Byron. With Mike Jackson failing to make the 53, there are no clear "next men up" to replace the existing top-4 corners with shortly expiring contracts.
  • DE is also a pretty glaring hole, considering we likely won't re-sign Quinn, and Crawford is almost certainly a cap casualty. Compared to CB, there is more potential for it to be filled with the existing roster, if Dorance Armstrong can develop and/or Randy Gregory can get and stay on the field.
  • 3T is a sneaky need. Ideally, Trysten Hill will take over full-time, but he hasn't inspired a ton of confidence. We rotate these guys enough that you'd have to consider a real disrupter. I wouldn't expect a 1T early, though. Maybe Woods or Covington re-sign one a cheap deal.
  • WR will be interesting. I'd like to think Cedrick Wilson could come camp next year and play the slot full-time. I also think they would re-sign Cobb on another 1-year deal if they could. But if the right option is available in the draft, you'd probably say yes.
  • Safety, of all the question marks, probably has the most promising backup with Donovan Wilson. And Wods seems like a player they will want to re-sign. I don't expect that this will be an early draft pick.
  • TE is wide open after this season, but I don't expect them to invest big here. I wonder if they can extend Jarwin on a cheap deal.

I admittedly haven't watched much college football or paid too much attention to the draft prospects for next year as I usually do...but these are a couple guys I wouldn't mind seeing land here:

TE:
Al Okwuegbunam, Missouri

EDGE:
Chase Young, Ohio State
A.J. Epenesa, Iowa
Terrell Lewis, Alabama

DT:
Raekwon Davis, Alabama
Derrick Brown, Auburn
Rashard Lawrence, LSU

CB:
C.J. Henderson, Florida
Bryce Hall, Virginia
Kris Fulton, LSU
