Jaguars trade 2020 5th round pick to Steelers for QB Josh Dobbs

Both are probably destined to be backups...

I think Dobbs has starting caliber tools.  Great arm strength and elite athleticism.  He's always flashing starter potential.  He just needs consistency.

He's got a great opportunity now with the Jags.  Minshew played well yesterday but the Jags obviously don't trust him.  They wouldn't have spent a 5th round pick on a guy they plan to be their 3rd string QB when Foles returns.  Minshew will have a short leash.  If he struggles over the next couple of games Dobbs will be the starter.

Jaguars are a very talented team.  Dobbs has a chance to succeed.

Geez what rocket science. The Jaguars traded for a backup because their rookie backup is starting while their entrenched starter is hurt and they don't have another backup.

Yep, sure displayed that by being unable to be Ben's backup.

He had an unlucky preseason.  Touchdowns getting called back because of phantom penalties.  Bad field position because the defense couldn't get off the field when he was in.  Tipped INTs.  Rudolph on the other hand had a lucky preseason.  Defense gave him great field position multiple times for quick TD drives.  He also had more opportunities.

I thought Dobbs showed growth this year from last preseason though it didn't show up on the stat sheet.    He looks ready to be a good player in the NFL.

Well if Dobbs was as good as you peg hin Pittsburgh wouldn't slot him as third string.

If you just need a backup, you can get one off the street for no draft compensation.  The Jags drafted Minshew in the 6th round this year.  They just gave up a 5th rounder for Dobbs.   Obviously they think a little more highly of Dobbs than they did of Minshew before the draft.

I believe the Jags don't trust Minshew to keep them afloat with Nick Foles out for the next 9 weeks.   They're bringing in Dobbs with the idea that if Minshew struggles he can maybe help keep them stay afloat until Foles comes back.  No team just gives up a 5th round pick on a guy they plan to be their 3rd string QB in 9 weeks.

Humans make mistakes.  Also fit matters.

You can't think of examples where one team gives up on a guy who then becomes good elsewhere?

Happens all the time in football.
