the way the vikings have managed their cap space while signing kirk to his massive deal AND extending all their core guys is amazing.

EDIT: it really helps when your homegrown guys give you discounts. diggs and hunter make less than $15 million next year, harrison smith makes less than $11 million, etc.

that said, having the least cap space to work with this season and already the third least cap space next season isn't a place teams want to be in too often.

There are several 30+ year olds on the Vikes who may not be playing in MN after this year in Reiff, Rudolph, Griffen, Joseph or Rhodes. All make a large chunk of money. It’s going to be hard to extend some of the younger players who deserve new deals if MN can’t make some of those tough cuts.

Ugh, the saint used to be TERRIBLE about cutting “hometown” guys when the time came. Way too much loyalty. Scott Shanle was a Saint for WAAAAAY too long. They’re better now, but they used to make really questionable personnel decisions all the time, and I think that was the main reason, trying to keep the old timers happy
