Anchorage Wolves

Team:

What a win last week against the defending champs on the road! This week we take on a very well schemed and prepared Seoul team.

Offensive Formations:

Our base offense this week once again will be a three wide (Tyler Boyd, Preston Williams outside and Cooper Kupp in the slot), one tight (George Kittle), one back set (Mark Ingram 80%, Dion Lewis 10%, Tony Pollard 10%).  We will also run two tight sets as well as two RB sets (Kupp moves outside on both sets and Preston Williams comes off the field, Noah Fant and Tommy Sweeney split reps as TE2).

Offensive Philosophy:

We will feature a quick passing attack with seam stretching to run a fast paced offense. We will utilize inside out combo routes with the TE and slot receiver to stretch the field on the inside on some plays and outside on others while always creating a quick strike option either from the perimeter or slot. This will help neutralize the outside rush of Chubb and Ingram (see what Oakland did against Chubb and what has been successful against Ingram in the past), while allowing us to sustain long play drives to tire out their defense while also playing up tempo. We will run a zone rushing attack to take advantage of some of the lack of athleticism on the front line and quickly gash their front. Eddie Goldman is Questionable coming into this game and we will take advantage of this in the middle of their D. If they begin to crunch down on the run with those Edge Defenders we will use play action to take advantage of their defense, while also getting outside on some zone stretch runs. We will run a hurry up offense to tire out their big boys up front. Seoul has a large defensive front and we want to wear them out. Like body punches in a fight each play will add up and take its toll. Long play drives matched with hurry up offense will tire the defense out for the present drives and for future drives during the game. We will pound the rock throughout the game but especially late into the game if we aren’t trailing to take advantage of big play runs against a tired defense.

Defensive Formations:

Our base D is basically a 4-3-4 under this week with Collins playing in the box as that third LBer on Kelce’s side. There will be three corners on the field against two tight and three wide sets. The Third Corner will line up on the second TE or slot receiver side with the WLB on that side also. If they go 4 wide Budda Baker will roll down and will play the dime Safety/corner and Jordan Whitehead will play FS. If they run a two back offense, we will go traditional 4-3. If Jarrad Davis does not play Nick Vigil plays the standard WLB role with Jamie Collins as the third LBer. If Davis does play Jamie Collins is still the 3rd LBer as we like his coverage ability.

Defensive Philosophy:

We are primarily a zone team, running mostly cover 3 with some blitzing mixed in, some cover 2, and some man. We like to always have a deep center fielder type to eliminate big plays and assist with some of the speed our longer corners face, and make plays on those seam routes. Seoul likes to run a two tight set and against this we will still run a nickel defense while bringing Landon Collins down like the third LBer. We like this formation still against two tights because it allows us to maintain more speed behind our front four and we like the size of our corners along with their physicality and tackling to help matchup with TE’s in zone, as well as RB’s coming out of the backfield. Which are two aspects Seoul really likes to feature in their passing game. We have a very stout Dline against the run and we can get away with this nickel formation because of their run defense. Our ends are great run stoppers as are our interior dlineman. We want to funnel runs inside where our dline can crush down on the run game. Hooper doesn’t concern us as a run blocker and we can beat up on their two tight sets still.

Front 7 (Run Defense and Pass Rush):

Sam Hubbard is getting the start at RE this week. He is an active player who succeeds on the edge and on stunts. Cameron Jordan will be the LE and go against Donald Penn who drew three penalties last week. Trey Flowers will back up both end spots, with Bud Dupree acting as a pass rush specialist and depth in the rotation. Vita Vea gets the start at NT with Ed Oliver starting at under tackle. Javon Hargrave and Derek Wolfe will back up the interior with Wolfe providing some flexibility to play the jumbo end behind Cam Jordan. I once again want to keep my Dline fresh so we will have a healthy rotation. With Hubbard emerging we really like our End depth, as Flowers is a movable chess piece coming off the bench at either end spot. On clear passing downs or long to go situations, Flowers and Hubbard will play end, while Oliver and Jordan play the DT positions. Our Dline will be efficient at getting their hands up in passing lanes to disrupt the quick passes of Seoul. We will once again introduce a variety of stunts as we like the athleticism of our DT’s and the versatility of our ends to rush inside to confuse the Oline. Vita Vea and Ed Oliver will close down the pocket from the interior and not let Carr or Murray have a chance to step up.  If Murray gets the start, when we stunt, the WLB and Landon Collins will have outside contain freeing up the interior four. When we do not stunt our ends are responsible for outside contain and will incorporate some blitzes from our LBer corps to throw off his timing plus mixing up the zone behind the front four. In a 4-3 if they play the 2 RB set, we will bring in Jamie Collins as our third LBer and drop Landon a little deeper in a traditional SS role.

Secondary and LBer (Coverage):

We will play Press in every coverage we play to give the same look pre snap. In our Cover 3, Trumaine Johnson and Chidobe Awuzie have deep thirds after pressing. Breeland and Collins have curl to flat. Schobert and the WLB have Middle Hook. When one is blitzing the other has Middle zone with head on a swivel. Whichever side LBer blitzes that curl to flat defender lingers a little longer in curl for anything developing in the absence of the coverage zone of the blitzing defender. If Murray is in, in some coverage packages we will not blitz and the MLB will have spy, while the WLB has Middle Hook. In the Cover 3 the Free Safety has the middle deep third. In our Cover 2 looks we will have a bit of a different strategy. We will alternate the second player dropping into the deep 2nd as we still want Landon up at LBer position. This will help us disguise our Cover 2 as Cover 3. We will keep Budda at FS in the middle of the field and it will appear he has deep third, as our corners press, Landon will bail to his deep half, as Budda slides over from middle to his deep half. The Corners after pressing have sink to flat react. Breeland and the MLB have a seam hook drop, as the WLB slides over to the middle seam drop. The other way we will flip this coverage is to have the Field side corner press and then drop back into the second deep half with Budda in the middle and shifting over to the other deep half. Breeland then has the sink to flat react on the field side. The WLB and Landon have the seam hook drop, while the MLB has the middle seam drop. The Boundary corner has sink to flat react after pressing on his side. Lastly when we mix up some man into this coverage, which we won’t play a lot of, the outside corners will man the outside receivers. Breeland will take the second TE or slot receiver. The WLB will man the RB, while the MLB and Collins bracket Kelce, with Budda deep. If they decide to go with 2 RB’s, 1 TE, 2 WR our zone coverages remain similar just with that extra LBer in Jamie Collins instead of the Nickel Corner. Man Coverage just shifts in this formation with Collins manning the second RB.

Go Wolves!

Seoul Dragons

Let’s give a warm welcome and a defeat to Pacific newcomer Anchorage Wolves

Offense

Emphasis on our passing game.Until the score dictates a different strategy, we’re going to focus a lot on our passing game. Anchorage DL is pretty stout against the run but less effective in pass rushing, and their back 7 isn’t anything great, so we want to target it. We are going to have Carr in the shotgun a lot, with David Johnson next to him most of the game and we are going to attack that back seven.

Find the matchup we like.Whether in man or zone we expect to find a matchup we like and that we can target on every snap. To do that we will have a ton of pre-snap movements to get Anchorage to show their hand. Whether it’s motioning a TE or Johnson outside, TY inside Tyrell Williams or others, pre-snap movement will be key for us.

We expect Anchorage to run a lot of zone coverage in this one, so expect a lot of zone plays as well. Kelce and Johnson will run a bunch of corner routes to beat a cover 3, while Crowder and Hilton will run crossing routes to target the middle of the field in case of a cover 4. If Anchorage shows zone before snap, we also will have Tyrell running option routes, looking for a soft spot in that zone where we can target his size but having the option to go deeper if Anchorage tricked us.

Vs man, we expect some blitzes as well, so we will try to target them deep with Tyrell and TY, who we think can beat Trumaine and Awuzie fairly consistently. Kelce, Johnson (if not in protection) and Crowder will be our safety valves. Crowder will run, vs man or zone, a bunch of routes middle of the field as we think his quickness and shiftiness will be a mismatch vs the taller Breeland in the slot.

Keep Carr clean. We like our OL to hold up vs Anchorage DL, aside from the RT spot where we might have so difficulties. We’ll not hesitate to shift protection to the right side if Cam Jordan is facing Penn, giving him additional protection. In which case, David Johnson is responsible for blitz pickups. If Anchorage shows it’s pass rushing DL with Hubbard and Flowers on the edge and Jordan/Hargrave inside, we will trust our guys to handle their matchup and Reiter will be responsible for blitz pickups (or compensating a blitz coming from outside). If things go wary there, we will adjust in the 2ndhalf and go to a quicker passing game with shorter routes and quick decision making from Carr.

Run game.Running the ball will be secondary in this game but we can’t totally forget it. At first, we will try to use screens, jet sweeps and tosses to run mainly outside and avoid Anchorage DL. David Johnson will handle most of the snaps, with Drake backing him up to give a breather here and there. If we get a lead and we have to run more, Howard will see more snaps and we may go to heavier packages with Hopper and even Everett on 3TE sets, and we will run a more balanced running game

Defense

Stop the run. Anchorage has often relied to their zone blocking running game and we respect their ability there. They have a very solid OL and a capable RB with Ingram. We are going to run a heavier front to stop that. Expect a lot of rotation on the DL. Glasgow and Settle will rotate with Goldman at the NT spot and will see equal share of snaps if Goldman is out. Collins will back up Joseph. Okafor, a solid run stuffing DE, will rotate with Jarrett at 4T. Ingram and Chubb will rotate at LEO. Gap control will be key here to stop the run, and we expect our DL to handle this. On passing downs, we will run a more usual DL with Ingram and Chubb outside and Jarrett and Joseph inside to get a more attacking front.

George Kittle We will take a page out of New England playbook to limit Kittle ability in this game. Kittle will see a special coverage on almost every play. He will face Shaq Thompson on every snap at the line, and Shaq will jam him at the line as long as he can. When Kittle is able to get through Shaq, Justin Reid takes over coverage assignment, while Shaq goes on a delayed blitz. This should limit Kittle ability to get quick looks from Cousins, while giving us an extra blitzer, albeit later in the play. If Kittle lines up as an H back, he will see simple over under double coverage. On passing downs, Justin Reid will be replaced by Darius Slay with Shaq alternating between the aforementioned line jamming, zone coverage assignment and straight up blitzing.

Man coverage. Aside from Kittle, we will not spend additional resources on Anchorage weapons, expecting our guys to win their battles consistently. Slay – Darby on passing downs – gets Boyd. Darby – Fuller on passing downs – gets Kupp. Sidney Jones gets Preston Williams. When he comes into the field, Agholor will face Fuller. Fant gets Mosley (Bradham if out) when he plays. Ingram gets the leftover LB (Mosley/Bradham in 3WR sets, Bradham/Davis in 2TE sets). Marcus Williams will play deep zone mostly to prevent us from getting beat deep, but he might also provide additional help on Deon Lewis when he plays
