How bad are the Miami Dolphins?

Who wouldn't pay a little money to watch the best college team to play the worst pro team? It's a shame that could never happen. They could raise $100M+ and donate it to charity.

In a year like this one, if Trevor Lawrence lives up to the hype, and if Miami lives up to the anti-hype, I actually would like to see that.

Most years, it'd be an absolute slaughter.  This season, it might be as close as a regular whipping.

MIA currently probably has the best team ever (their undefeated championship team) and at this rate might have the worst team ever soon enough too.

That 14-0 team was not one of the best 25 NFL teams.

Their schedule was pathetic

  • 1-13 Oilers
  • 3-11 Patriots
  • 3-11 Patriots
  • 4-9-1 Bills
  • 4-9-1 Bills
  • 4-9-1 Chargers
  • 4-9-1 Cardinals
  • 5-9 Colts
  • 5-9 Colts
  • 7-7 Jets
  • 7-7 Jets
  • 7-7 Vikings
  • 8-6 Giants
  • 8-6 Chiefs

That's a strength of schedule of 70-122-4  (.367)

  • 70-108-4 not counting playing the Dolphins (.396)

Sure they won some close games against good playoff competition but that 14-0 regular is the most overrated anything in Sports.

  • They outscored their playoff opponents 55-38

The Steelers lost 3 games that year because they split with the 8-6 Bengals, they split with the 10-4 Browns, and they lost to the 10-4 Cowboys.

  • they also beat the 10-3-1 Raiders
  • The Steelers were .500 vs 10 win teams just like the Dolphins  (0-0)

The Dolphins deserved the 1972 Season Lombardi Trophy, to be the answer of a trivia question, and little else.

The 12-2 Dolphins of the next season faced the following teams:

  • 10-4 Cowboys
  • 10-4 Steelers
  • 9-4-1 Raiders
  • 9-5 Bills
  • 9-5 Bills
  • 7-5-2 Browns
  • 6-7-1 Lions
  • 5-9 Patriots
  • 5-9 Patriots
  • 5-9 SF 49ers
  • 4-10 Jets
  • 4-10 Jets
  • 4-10 Colts
  • 4-10 Colts

That's a strength of schedule of 91-101-4 (.474)

89-89-4 not counting playing the Dolphins (.500)

The Dolphins were 2-0 against 10 win teams.

They also demolished their playoff opponents by a combined score of 85-33

  • winning by 17, 17 and 18 points.

The 1973 Dolphins were clearly superior to the 1972 Dolphins.

all of the teams you named are easily better than us.

EASILY.

Sure, but they all have deep problems as well.  Will Miami be favored in any of them?  No.  But can they win one or two of them, absolutely.

i don't think you quite understand how bad we actually are

honestly i'd put the odds being no better of a coinflip that we can win one, let alone two

in each of the games you mentioned I think it's far more likely we get blown out than come down with a W

Things change.  Usually around week 3 or 4, there's a flip in what we saw weeks 1/2 and really unpredictable things start to happen.  Teams that showed badly all of the sudden play well.  Teams that played great have poor showings.

I can't predict when or against whom, but there's going to be a weird week and the Dolphins will be competitive.  Have faith.

So you're saying Dolphins 28, Cowboys 24? I'm with you man.

  • 2 weeks later...

So revisiting this:

- Dolphins are now 0-4 with a -137 PD differential.

- They've lost each game by at least 20. Three of which at home.

- That being said, all 4 opponents they have faced were playoff teams last year and all are at least in contention to make it again this season.

Do we think this team is still on pace to go 0-16 and be remembered as possibly the WOAT team?
