Hungary Hippos

Offense:

This week's offensive focus is the via the ground game. With Ansah out again, Rome is forced to rely on either Fowler or Davenport to hold the edge of the defense. Utilzing a tight two TE set, we look to wash out Rome's front line and get into the second level of the defense. By switching to a 2 TE set, it forces Rome into a precarious situation with their depth. Last week Rome only used three LBers. Two active one on defense. By having a 2 TE set and pulling a WR off the field it sets up Rome's defense to deploy all three LBers throughout the game with no rest. We look to attack that second level with our three powerbacks in Fournette, Peterson and Brown to wear out the front seven early. The more exhausted they become the more they will be susceptible to missed tackles, as well as being gassed when tasked to cover the TEs when in pass coverage.

The second caveat of this strategy is it keeps Brees and company off the field. They like to use a hurry up offense, so the best way to combat that is to not give them clock. The running game will eat clock throughout the game keeping Rome's offense off the field.

In regards to the passing game, as the game goes on if Rome decides to stack the box by leaving a safety at the second level to help the gassed LB core leaving one deep, we will look to use our pair of big gain receivers in Fitzgerald and DK to take the top off of the defense and get some longer gains. Humphrey is coming off injury, and may not be in peak form which could make him a liability in coverage against the pair. We will also be utilizing our pair of TEs in Olsen and Hockenson to move the chains to offset the running game and keep the LBing core constantly running on fumes.

Defense:

Rome is probably one of the most well balanced offense in the league. The one chink in their armor, however, is their guard play. Foster last week did not do very well in pass blocking and main starter Lindstrom was injured, main backup Incognito is suspended, Wisnewski is a FA, which leaves Rome with a just back from foot and calf injuries Iupati who is questionable but more likely to play. Thus the first point we are going to make is putting A'Shawn Robinson our best pass rushing defensivelineman right over that RG position to take advantage of the potential musical chairs there.

Rome likes to move fast. They like to play a hurry up offense with three wide as well as two TEs. Which means they are going to try to gas the defense on drives. Thus every time they make a personnel change. Whether it be a WR/TE we will have our depth reserves ready to come in. At Edge Suggs and Addison will come in sporadically for Graham and Wake to keep the pass rush fresh on Brees. Davison for the interior which will help clog up the running game even further. Reddick or White sporadically for Alexander while Kuechly stays on the field. Additionally I have another two solid CBs in Melvin and Apple to come in as needed for when Rome tries to go vertical.

To help with coverage this week we are dropping into a Cover 3 Zone look. The Seahawks used this strategy primarily on their way to winning the Superbowl a few years ago. In this coverage look Talib and Joseph will be in press formation and  drop into the outside third (which allows the receivers to jam and run with the receiver) with Harrison Smith playing deep middle where the CBs funnel the vertical routes. Peppers and Kirkpatrick will play the curl and flats while Kuechly and Alexander drop into the Middle Hooks. This will allow the defense to maintain stiff coverage responsibilites no matter the formation Rome comes out with. It also allows for defense against the run as well by keeping the SS up close.

Rome Eternals

Offense

Tempo

Fast fast fast.  Hungary lacks interior line depth so we hope to run at and tired out the big boys .

Toting the Rock

With Jonathon Allen out, Hungary is down to three interior linemen including a rotational Saint they just picked up off waivers.   We're putting two tight ends on the field and running behind one of bdl best offensive teams lines. This two tight end formation may not be even be accounted for by Hungary and we are hoping to see Kyzir White come on the field for a it.  If so we are running to his side of the field. We are hurry up running which may sound weird but we plan on catching Hungary napping on the running game early and wear down Robinson and Shelton out. Mario Addison has struggled mightily against the run so we hope he's out there too.

Expect a lot of pulling guards to get our RB to the second level.  We rotate backs on a 40 40-20 basis with Mack And Gurley getting the higher workload and Lindsey seeing action on third downs.

Our tackles speak for themselves and Linder has proven to be one of the best centers over the last couple seasons.  Iupati is penciled in to start. If he can't go we rotate in Braden Smith to be the main pulling guard. If we see Kuechley is assigned one particular person, that individual will chip an edge to help against any blitz

Passing

With the two tight end sets. We are hoping to get Lorenzo Alexander once on one with one of our athletic TE or even better Lindsey or Gurley.  If we see that matchup with the cover one look PR likes to give. Expect a ton of wheel routes and motioning RB out. If not we expect Eifert to use his athleticism and experience together consistently move the chains.

If for some reason Hungary decides to put Reddick on the field the same time as Alexander. That just gives us a second glorified defensive end to attack in coverage.

Whoever Luke is assigned to will run into the flats after their chip to remove Wichita biggest playmaker from the equation.

Edelman and Benjamin comes in as the third and fourth WR respectively.   In very long distances we go to five wide with Goodwin and have him run a safety off deep to open up that side of the field.

With our running game zooming, we are also gonna use a fair amount of play action go routes to Juju and Amari in base sets.  The play action should buy our WR an extra second to beat any press for some big gains and scores.

Brees will use motion often to get a read on zone or man.  If zone expect the floods and seam routes that the veteran star qb knows how to hit.

TL/DR:  Run heavy hurry up to wear down thin defense.  Chip edges and trusting the talented line. Attack edge LB in coverage and Kyzir White in the run game .

Defense

This week we face Jared Goff and a solid running tandem led by Leonard Fournette

The offensive line is very solid but we trust our excellent run defenders to maintain their responsibility and funnel Fournette inside to our LB and Box safety.

On the outside we will be playing majority man one deep safety.  We feel our corner talent is the best group in the league. Humphrey will be on Larry , Jackson goes speed for speed and will get likely Metcalf or Gabriel if PR for some reason starts him while Amukamra gets Sanu or Gabriel if it's Gabriel and Metcalf in three wide.  Four wide nrc gets whichever lines up in the slot. Jenkins around for five wide.

Hicks or LVE is in charge of Olsen  while either LVE or Swearinger grabs the RB depending on who is blitzing(three options to keep the offense guessing) .  Boston plays the cover one role for us cheating towards the Metcalf side of the field. We trust our other corners in press coverage to throw off the Hungary timing as Fitz and Sanu aren't much of deep threats at this time in their careers .

This defense allows us to put Swearinger in the box to help against the run while up front we have a great run stopping line with Dunlap Mccoy and Tomlinson. Our rotation is much deeper this season including ziggy ansah on an edge with Tillery and ioannidis pass rushing down specialists.  If Hungary keeps a player in, his cover man gets the underneath robber zone. Two te Milano hops on the field for a corner (based on WR assignment) with the second TE his responsibility.

Our offensive tempo should allow this strategy of fresh linemen to have its best success against a tired o line.   Our blitzes will mainly be between the C RG block as Osemele has had difficulties picking those up both this and last year.  We will blitz from all over however

We will per usual mix in zones blitz, base zone and occasional cover two man just to keep the offense guessing

Tl/dr. Keep Fournette bottled up.  Trust the talented corner group. Vary blitzes as all LB can cover. Rotate fresh bodies up front

Base Zone defense all game against Brees.  Brave strategy cotton

Why did you say I lack interior depth when I always bring multiple dlinemen :P

PS: Davison is the starting DT for Atlanta. He played the same amount of snaps as Jarrett last week.

Welcome to the Cover 3. A very effective defensive strategy that locks an opposing offense especially since the coverage feeds together. And with a 2 TEset that helps that even further.

Going Rome here. I think both teams wrongly focused on running the ball here. I like both offensive lines but I also like both defensive lines so I'm not sure there's a huge advantage here for either team there. But Rome has the much better RB rotation.

I also believe they have the most successful passing game there. Zone vs Brees is hard you have to make sure you can press those wideouts and apply enough pressure, especially inside, so that he doesn't get his quick passing going. I don't believe Hungary inside rush is good enough to consistently beat Rome inside OL. On the other side, while I like some matchups for Hungary (Fitz was pretty good vs BAL this week, though I'm not sure if Humphrey was assigned to him most of the game), I think Rome gets more stops than Hungary.

31-17 Rome

I think my two questions here are how does Rome get to 31 when both teams are focusing on the run. He is milking his own clock as well as I am.

Additionally focusing on the run literally is the way to take the sails out of the up tempo high profile offense. Airing it out would do the opposite. It would put more time on the clock, more time potentially for Brees to work. You want long drives using the running game and TEs underneath to move the chains and extend those drives to keep the opposing offense off the field.

Right but rushing four against a good o line and Brees just doesn't sound smart really.  Gives him plenty of time to pick it apart with a veteran group of targets

I'm gonna mull this one over. Not a fan of zone vs. Brees but Brees' health is also a concern. Idk that either team brought a good strategy for their run game, so for me it's going to come down to how I think the passing attacks will play out vs. Opposing defenses and whether I thi k Hungary has a defense good enough to pull off zone vs. Brees

Remember this. Injuries shouldn’t factor in these games if they occur in the game with no previous history of the injury. Brees should have a clean bill of health this week. It’s next week where the issue may occur. Now if a player came into the game with a shoulder injury and they reinjured the same shoulder then you could look at the injury.

To be fair I think running the ball against a nickel defense running zone while I have two te should work out well

I don't know if you have thought this out, but running the ball in a press zone means you are basically running into a 4-4 every play since the SS and NCB would be at that level.

You still haven't addressed how your second tier is going to have the endurance to keep up considering all 3 of your LBers will be on the field the entire game getting worked at the second level without rest, and being asked to be thrown in coverage as well against the TEs. They will be gassed.
