Broncos Game Review

Going to look at as many plays as I can at lunch and see what went wrong.

Play 1.

IZ to Montgomery.

Play is designed for Leno to chip EMLOS (end man on line of scrimmage) to outside and move to ILB.  Leno did that.  Motion TE (Burton) is supposed to cut EMLOS (Chubb) Leno leaves to create the seal.

Burton didn't get to Chubb fast enough AND CB blitzs inside.  WR Patterson has no chance to block blitzing CB to his inside.

If Burton does his job correctly and changes his angle,  he cuts Chubb and ideally Chubb's body seals off blitzing CB creating a running lane.  Maybe CB is sealed maybe he isn't, but no chance if you don't block Chubb.   Because Burton was late or took a bad angle Chubb blew up the play.

Burton is at fault for this play.   It still may have been stopped by blitzing CB.  But it never had a chance because Burton screwed up.

Play 2

IZ to Cohen other way this time.

This time motion TE is Shaheen.

Shaheen doesn't go for cut he slams into Miller with a crap load of force and Miller eats it and holds his ground.  Shaheen pad level could have been better and I think he expected that running full speed into Miller with all his weight was going to jar him back and it didn't.  It should have, it was a really good hit by Shaheen.  High impact.   Miller must be strong as all get out.

Shaheen basically doesn't know what to do after he intially drills him and ends up pulling on top of his helmet and falling back while Miller uses perfect technique and squeezes the gap down exactly like he should.   This is text book DE play by Miller.

The 3 tech stones the double team of Long and Massie and neither get off to ILB who easily makes the play.  There was no where for Cohen to go.

Bears actually did everything correct on this play, the Broncos just out athlete them here.

Both plays though their stud DEs were just better than our not stud TEs.

Play 3.

It's 3rd and 9 after two basic no gain runs.   Not a high percentage down for anyone.

 3 x 1 single back set.

The one is Shaheen who is split off but stays to block Miller who is lined up outside him.  Well designed.

Miller comes in really hard and spooks Mitch out of pocket although Massie would have likely run him by.   In real time you can see why Mitch may have been worried because DL was also pushing pocket.

Mitch makes a near perfect pass to Cohen on run and DB makes an outstanding last minute break up.

Aside from maybe getting spooked early, this was actually an outstanding play by MT IMO on 3rd and 9.  That play missed by literally an inch.

Incomplete.

2nd series.

Play 1.

Bears are in a power formation with a TE in backfield to strong side.  Bears bring in another OL to play TE.  Larsen.

Bears run ... power to Montgomery to strong side - what a surprise.

Miller crashes hard inside and takes out 4 blockers in process.  4!   Play is dead on arrival.  Awesome play by Miller.

Broncos fans are really down on his pass rush, but in first two series his play against the run if freakin amazing.

Defensive holding is called and Bears get 5 yards.

Play 4.

Fake outside zone right boot left with a backside drag and TE in flat.

Braunecker makes catch for 6 yards and first down.

This was only play to be made.  The drag was well covered. and would have been a pick.

Nice job by MT here.

Really not seeing sickening play so far I expected by our QB.  So far he is playing quite well given circumstances.

Play 5.

First and 10.

Bears are in 3 x 1 tight bunch to right with a single back.

All the receivers are well inside the numbers.

The single receiver is Arob and clearly man to man with Chris Harris.

Who this is interesting.

You can see that Arob is man up with Harris.   MT has clearly decided pre snap he is going to Arob  man to man here.  Arob is a 50.50 ball specialist and he comes down with a lot of them.  He was doing it all camp.    I can't really fault MT for this line of thinking.

He never looks at anyone beside Arob here and throws up a 50.50 ball.  Chris Harris wins it.

Incomplete.

Both flat players were open on other side.  But it was a pre snap pre determined read on a mono y mono play.  Something Nagy probably agreed with as part of game plan.

Lots of you tubers and Twitter guys are going to post photos of the wide open guys, but that isn't fair.  MT was doing what is often the right thing.  Arob simply didn't make the play and Harris did.

Two great players and one was just greater.

Again this is not garbage QB play.  The ball was where it needed to be.  It was a rebound toss up.  I am actually encouraged thus far.

Play 6.

2 and 10.

Draw to Montgomery leftt out of gun.

Leno tries to block two guys and blocks none (which always happens when you try that - funny how things you see a million times in little league you still see in pros).

Montgomery amazingly jukes both unblocked guys and gains 7 yards.

What a play by Montgomery!  Should have been no gain.

This is a big positive although the negative is it was a terrible play call.  We did not have numbers for this play.  MT should have checked out of this or Nagy should have called TO.

Something.  I guess they knew Montgomery could juke two unblocked players.

Play 7.

3rd and 3.

Bears are in gun and have their tight 3 x 1 bunch formation again.

They run IZ to Montgomery.

Burton is motion blocker  and blocks no one.

But it doesn't matter this time because no one was crashing.   Chubb was worried about Burton in flat so he stayed home.  So Burton did his job by default.

WOW!.  What vision by Montgomery!  This is vintage Steeler Bell patient running and exploding through a tiny crease.

9 yard gain by Montgomery.  This guy looks like a player.

Play 8.

1st and 10.

Mike Davis is in game in single back TE set.

Bears run power right.

Scratch that.  edit.

This was power.  I originally blamed Massie.  But power is designed to go inside.  Davis didn't put his nose in hole and tried to bounce exactly where Massie was blocking his guy.

This is on Davis not Massie.

Play should have been a 4 yard gain.  instead it was loss of 1.

play 10.

3rd and 8.

(This is where Davis bouncing the play on power screws us, because it should be 3rd and 2.  3rd and 8 is a *****).

Shaheen in the flat for 6 yards - makes his guy miss! - and gets the 3 extra yards for first down. 9 yard gain!

On 3rd and 8!  Shaheen!

Again in micro view and study.  There is a lot to be positive about - so far

This is not crappy Qb play - at all - so far.

Ag.  Gotta go do some work.

I'll try to do more tomorrow.  Unless someone else like @RunningVaccsor whoever with gamepass wants to pick it up from here.

It's got to get really bad right?

I remember it as really bad.

So far its not bad at all.

Montgomery looks like a stud and Mitch isn't playing nearly as bad as I thought.  Wheels probably come off in a bit.

Okay where was I ....

2nd series Play 11.  11 play drive so far .  That's good.

1st and 10. 30 yard line.

Bears are trips left, tight.  3x1.

IZ with Monty end around look using Patterson. (Going to write "Monty" from here on out.  Montgomery is too long to type and I keep having to think about how to spell it.)

Daniels makes an F- block on LB who meets Monty in backfield.  Just awful by Daniels.  Total whiff or this may have been a nice play.

1 yard gain for Monty.

See what I mean about 1 guy on each play screwing up what could be something good?  This is good/news bad news.  Bad news is it keeps happening and good news is it isn't far from being fixable.

That play should have been at least 4 yards and it should be 2 and 6 rather than 2nd an 9.  Huge difference.
