What made Trubisky stand out in the draft compared to Mahomes and Watson?

Despite only being a starter for one year at North Carolina, Trubisky went second overall in the 2017 draft, over Deshaun Watson, who went to back-to-back National Championships winning one, and Patrick Mahomes, who is arguably the current face of the league. Both Watson and Mahomes were multiyear starters as well. What exactly made Trubisky higher rated among draft pundits besides general ignorance?

Right now Mahomes is arguably the best QB in the league and Watson is one of the most criminally underrated. Trubisky on the other hand is painfully mediocre and is seen as the weak link on a Chicago team that has SB aspirations.

He was coming out of a program that played a much more NFL ready system, whereas Watson seemed like a product of the talent he was surrounded with and Mahomes was seen as an air-raid gimmick.

Personally, I was all aboard the Mahomes train but didn't see a difference in Watson and Dobbs. Clearly I was very wrong.

I think that will be the last draft where college system is really held against a QB's pedigree.

Mitch was a classic example of a late riser because he had a strong arm, was mobile, and probably interviewed great.

Watson was #1 for forever and should have been.  Maholmes was that freak talent in the bad system (most don't translate but his arm talent was just too much to deny).

The board should have gone Watson, Maholmes (highest upside), then Mitch.

I always hated this logic. Pretty much everyone agreed that everyone that was starting for Bama's defense was going to be drafted, so why are we knocking on a QB that beat said defense in the National Championship? Plus everyone is hyping up Trevor Lawrence who is playing with just as much, if not more, talent.

Watson has everything you're looking for in a QB. Brady-like intangibles and his arm skills are underrated.

Read their draft profiles and see if you can spot the clues on why people were so high on him but so low on the others:

Totally forgot Trubisky was taken ahead of Watson and Mahomes. Always fun to do the Hindsight 20/20 thing and ridicule old drafts. Of those three guys, the only one I'd watched play was Watson because he was an elite QB on an elite national championship team. Didn't know anything about the North Carolina or Texas Tech teams.

I remember KC trading up to get Mahomes and I was like "who?" I didn't know he'd thrown 41 freaking TD's his junior year. The Bills prolly regret trading away that draft pick to a salivating Chiefs' front office.

Trubisky had good numbers on a bad team his final year at UNC. Doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to take him #2.

I'm seeing a lot of mentions on Trubisky's accuracy. I guess that didn't translate from college to pro.
