Everyone is excited coming off an emotional high after perhaps the biggest win of the Bill O'Brian era.

We made halftime adjustments and everything, it felt like we had a real coach!

Now its time to move on the Carolina Panthers.

A couple things to consider

1. The Panthers are better than people think. The Texans are favored to win currently by 4 points, which I think is generous

2. The Panthers currently rank 11th in total offense and 4th in total defense. The Texans on the flip side rank 17th on offense and 22nd on defense

Injuries always play a major factor:

Texans: We shouldn't be missing any starters, but Tunsil and Reid have been battling through injuries and they are two of our most important starters

Panthers: Cam Newton is out,  Kawann Short, Bruce Irvin and Marquis Haynes were all limited, Trai Turner missed practice and is questionable. A few other guys are listed as questionable but probably will play.

Keys to the game

The Panthers have struggled in pass protection, giving up 8 sacks and according to some analysis they have the lowest pass block win rate in the NFL. Kyle Allen will be making the 3rd start of his career and he has looked the part, despite being undrafted. He has never thrown a pick in his few games. The Texans pass defense against the panthers pass offense will be a huge part of this game.

On the flip side, the Texans offensive line has to be better. There was improvement last week, but they have a long way to go. This week should be the first time this season that the same starting 5 linemen start again. The Panthers have recorded 12 sacks in the first 3 games, and we have given up 10. This will be a great test for our line.

Players to Watch

Will Fuller - Chris Godwin had a monster game against the panthers with all the attention on Mike Evans. Hopkins should create that same opening for Fuller and its time for him to show up

Whitney Mercilius - He's been on a tear to start the season and he needs to keep that up

Tytus Howard, Matt Scharping, Lonnie Johnson - We need improvement from the rookies, they are going to be playing big time minutes for a playoff contender and they need to mature quickly.

Other games that could have playoff implications later on, and who it would best benefit the Texans to see win:

Falcons over Titans
Lions over Chiefs
Bills over Patriots
Raiders over Colts
Dolphins over Chargers
Browns over Ravens
Broncos over Jaguars
Saints over Cowboys (Just because)

This is a big time game for us. We need to take this one and finish the first quarter 3-1

We need to get to 11 wins probably to win the division. 10 might do it but we basically can only afford 4 more loses and we still play

indy x2

ravens

chiefs

patriots

In theory we could lose all 5 of those and probably secure a wildcard at 10-6 but only if we win games like today. The panthers are good but they are dealing with some injuries so it’s nearly a must win.

I think the key guy in this game will be Zach Cunningham. He's got the responsibility of covering Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield, and the added responsibility of getting to the edge when McCaffrey tries to run outside.

Cunningham has to play a perfect game, because a single lapse... and Run CMC is going to belittle this defense. Don't let him get into space, confine his runs to minimal gains up the middle. That will force the Panthers to go to the air to DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel - I actually like a matchup of Moore v Roby and Samuel v Johnson. (Granted, Jonathan Joseph gets crushed by either of those guys, both have foot speed that can leave Joseph in the dust...)

No reason we should lose today.  We are at home playing against a QB making his 3rd career start. It's kind of his reunion tour since he played with the Aggies in this same stadium and he played for UH.  O'Brien needs to have this team focused and prepared coming off possibly his biggest win of his coaching career. I think Olsen might give us fits. We dont do well against good tight ends.
