vike daddy
The Vikings’ numbers against the pass are not as dominant as they have been in the past. Mike Zimmer’s teams have ranked 4th, 3rd and 4th in opponent quarterback rating over the last three seasons. Heading into Sunday’s games they ranked 18th allowing a 91.3 rating against, the highest mark since Zimmer’s first year in Minnesota. Prior to the weekend’s slate, starting corners Trae Waynes and Xavier Rhodes have graded 54th and 76th, respectively, of 81 corners by Pro Football Focus’ grading system. They have allowed ratings of 98.4 (Waynes) and 124.7 (Rhodes) on throws into their coverage. https://www.skornorth.com/vikings-2/2019/10/the-five-most-compelling-vikings-storylines-to-watch-in-the-second-half/
vikingsrule
Kind of questions why we’d even want to sign Waynes to the huge contract he’s going to get but then you see how bad Rhodes has become, kind of don’t have a choice.

By ANY/A allowed, they’re top 5. By passing DVOA against, they were 14th last week, and should be higher this week. Even by passer rating, it hasn’t been such a big dropoff. They were 4th last year at 83.3. If they’d been at 91.3 last year they’d have been 12th not 18th. QB play (and passing production) has dropped off considerably across the league with some terrible performances by a few offenses, especially with their backup QBs. Unfortunately for the Vikings, they’ve faced a series of top 10 QBs by production/quality (PFF passing grades): Ryan, Rodgers, Carr, Wentz and Stafford. They got the only decent QB play the Bears have had (Chase Daniel) this year, for most of that game. The only break they had was Haskins instead of Keenum for the second half on TNF. They’ve also had a few games with prolonged garbage time, especially the Falcons and Raiders, who racked up yards and a few TDs after the games were decided. There is some reason to find that the CBs haven’t played up to their usual level, and they do qualify as a disappointment so far. But the overall passing defense has been pretty good throughout except for the Lions game, and even that had more to do with Stafford and his receivers playing well than the Vikings playing badly.

JDBrocks
Now 5th in YPG and 3rd in PPG, including a seemingly significant amount of garbage time for the first half of the season.
Krauser
6th best opponent-adjusted ANY/A value: (and 4th best offense, and 3rd best team overall -- best in the NFC by this metric)

vikingsrule
Yet why do the CBs continue to struggle so much if both edge rushers are leading the league in pressure. It can’t just be the DT situation, pressure is apparently not an issue.
swede700
Zimmer has 2 weeks. He'll fix it. He generally does.

Because it will get exposed by great QBs. Can’t be giving up 400 yards every time we play a legit QB like Prescott. Russell Wilson is next and he’s been phenomenal. Krauser
Still 14th in pass defense DVOA. Down to 12th in ANY/A against but having played a very tough slate of opposing offenses. Justis' opponent adjusted ANY/A puts them 7th in the league on defense (and 3rd on offense, and 3rd overall): They've already played 5 games against the current top 7 offenses (KC, DAL, GB, OAK, DET), with 2 more to come (SEA and GB again). The only offense in the current top 7 that the Vikings won't face is the Vikings.

I also love the fact that we found him in the third round. What a steal!
vikingsrule
Hunter has had a quiet 3 week stretch, just half a sack. He’s still getting pressures, would be nice to get him to back to finishing those plays.
vikingsrule
Couldn’t help but ponder this but would the defense be better off if Barr signed with the Jets? Given that the Vikes would then have cap space, let’s say they resign Sheldon Richardson. Eric Wilson replaces Barr as the starter. Shamar Stephen is never signed. As a result of losing Barr, the Vikes get a 3rd round comp pick in 2020. So is the defense better with Barr and Stephen or Richardson and Wilson? swede700
To me, there's absolutely no question it's better as it is right now, than with Richardson and Wilson. Richardson never impressed me at all, and he made the defense worse as far as I was concerned.
