I could listen to Joe Montana talk about stories from the glory days for hours. Glad it was Mike Silver who interviewed him, since he was covering the squad at the time, and got pretty close with some of the fellas as a youngbuck himself.

Montana-related again, but this longform piece came out a few days ago before the Super bowl. From this perspective, pretty easy to understand why Joe still has some bitterness towards the organization. Especially amidst the fallout after the 1990 season. To be fair, Joe did keep getting hurt, and a potential future heir-apparent in Steve Young was waiting in the wings, but still...the way Joe was apparently treated is pretty disheartening to hear.

Sadly, 49ers HOF linebacker Dave Wilcox passed today. Great, great player. Before there was Willis/Bowman there was Wilcox/Hazeltine.

Wilcox spent 11 seasons playing outside linebacker for the 49ers, garnering him a reputation for a fearless playing style that earned him the nickname "The Intimidator." In his time in San Francisco, Wilcox was a two-time first-team All-Pro, two-time second-team All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowl selection.

"While Dave Wilcox was nicknamed 'The Intimidator' for his aggressive style of play, he was a kind, humble and gracious man in all other aspects of life," Jim Porter, the Hall of Fame president, said in a statement. "He transformed the outside linebacker position -- one of the many feats that earned him a forever home in Canton. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave's wife, Merle, and their entire family. We will preserve his legacy for generations to come."

Wilcox, the father of University of California football coach Justin Wilcox, arrived in the NFL at a time when the American Football League was competing for the services of top players. The Houston Oilers selected Wilcox in the sixth-round of the AFL draft and the Niners chose him in the third-round of the NFL draft. He opted to go to San Francisco and quickly established himself alongside Matt Hazeltine to form one of the league's most fearsome linebacker duos.

Many. Raiders, Bengals, Chargers, Falcons, Browns, Oilers, Seahawks, Colts (Baltimore), Vikings...

Multi-purpose stadiums, along with sharing a dome was the standard for decades, and decades. It's only in the last 15 to 20 years that teams started to branch off, and get their own stadiums for their specific sport.

Huh. Back then, I didn't watch as much NFL as I do now. 

Did any of them cover up the diamond? I hated that bare ground and winced every time our players had to run on it or get tackled on it.
