Wisconsin Badgers Thread | Fick got the Axe back

This will be interesting, Fickell is a good coach sure but honestly what does he go up against year after year at Cincinnati?  Tulane, UCF, SMU, Memphis or Houston from time to time?  Sure he brought in a decent amount of recruits to Cincinnati and guys were drafted but the only real super star was Sauce Gardner and Coby Bryant could be a great pro for awhile but that is about it.  Who knows about Myjai Sanders at this point and the rest.

Will be interesting what he does, sure he played and coached at Ohio State but not sure what he would be at a big time program that goes up against top of the line competition consistently.

I am still surprised they did not go with Jim Leonhard.  Maybe they did not like how they finished the season or something?  Obviously that OL is nothing what it used to be and that QB is a walking turnover.  Also not sure what they expected, they lost almost their entire starting secondary from last year not to mention the total key to the defense in Sanborn and Chenal, and they were not even that great with all of them anyway.  Sure they had Herbig and Benton back but that is about it in terms of top of the line defenders returning.  Not sure what they expected out of this season but will be interesting where it goes.

It is clearly a much harder division than in years past for the Big Ten East, it used to be a two team race usually with Iowa and Wisconsin but now clearly all are game with Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue and Nebraska will be improved and so could Northwestern which has very up and down years considering they were in the Big Ten title game two years ago.  In terms of identity playing tough physically football and good solid defense, they have a ton of teams in the East who play that way now as well in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and at times Northwestern.

Additionally, sources told FootballScoop that Fickell planned to take at least four additional members of his Bearcats’ staff to join his inaugural staff at Wisconsin. Sources told FootballScoop that defensive coordinator Mike Tressel, wideouts coach/passing game coordinator Mike Brown and co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Colin Hitschler all are expected to join Fickell in Madison.

Additionally, (Gino) Guidugli is a prime target to be the Badgers’ next offensive coordinator on Fickell’s staff – if Guidugli does not earn the Bearcats’ full-time head coaching post.

Bearcats chief of staff Greg Gillum also is expected to join Fickell at Wisconsin in a similar role. Gillum is a 40-plus-year veteran who logged more than a decade on staff at Ohio State and also coached collegiately at Akron, among other stops throughout Ohio.

I have him on ignore. Did he do his usual "write a lot of stuff but say absolutely nothing" schtick?

Of course you have me on ignore, you freaking think Tim Boyle is a beacon of QB arm talent in how he throws such a tight spiral.  PS only reason you ever watched him is because he was a backup on a Wisconsin football team in Green Bay, big shocker.  And you have more than once over the past two years brought up Graham Mertz as if he was something special on Wisconsin in terms of future NFL QB talent.  However your tune quickly switched both times as the year went on.  Yeah you got a real eye for talent buddy, good thing you have me on ignore.

Ask a legit question to people who apparently follow Wisconsin and you have no reply, very Wisconsin thing of you to do.  Enjoy Luke Fickell.  Maybe you will become Ohio State but then again no you won't.

He is a consistently great recruiter with what is considered one of the best S&C departments in the game. He was consistently recruiting above his weight class while at Cinci I don't expect that to change with a school like Wisconsin which should be a step up from Cinci and allow his recruiting to really shine.

Jim Leonhard is a great DC and probably a pretty good game day HC but does he have the connections to create a great staff or is he a natural recruiter? We don't know and frankly with USC & UCLA to the big 10 the Badgers don't have the time to figure it out. Fickell brings the experience and connections that are needed to quickly transition. The Badgers could find themselves in the doldrums of not even being a top 7 Big 10 team if they don't improve quickly.

Exactly why the old model just isn't going to work in this Big 10. With the divisions going away this won't be a cupcake to get back to the championship game like in years past. Ranking 20-15 isn't going to get Wisconsin anywhere near what it would have in previous seasons. They need to expand there recruiting to compete and Fickell is a known commodity in that field. There wasn't many coaches that would come available that I would have traded for Leonhard but Fickell is one of the few.
