sparky151
Bengals overpaid several players such as Uzomah, Gio, and Hart. I don't blame them for taking the money, but the team is terrible at resource allocation and finding alternatives. We're currently about 60 mil under the cap for 2020 with AJ as our only high paid player entering free agency. We could cut Glenn, Hart, and Preston Brown to free up 16 mil. But there will still be multiple teams with more cap space than that and no reason to believe the Bengals can recruit any top free agents. If we get the top pick we could take Tua. But if we slip up and win 2-4 games, we won't get a chance at him. We could maybe sign Teddy Bridgewater in free agency and dump Dalton. Teddy would likely cost 30 mil coming off a good stretch with the Saints. But it would let us use our top pick on Chase Young or the tackle from Georgia. They'll get second shot at a QB if MIA picks first. They'll still take a QB. And that's the right move. Teddy is fine, but there's enough tape of him to know he's good but not great. Strive for greatness.

Beck Bristow
Signing Bridgewater doesn't make sense. QB next year is going to be one of our backups from this year, an early draft pick or Andy Dalton if they want a veteran. "Upgrading" to a slightly better we hope, but more expensive qb would be about as smart as handing Bobby Hart right tackle with no competition again. sparky151
The point is that we can upgrade the QB position without using our top pick on it. If Bridgewater costs 30 mil per year, we could cut Dalton and save 17, plus Glenn, Hart, and Brown and save another 16. We'd be 63 mil under the cap with a high pick left and perhaps some credibility with other free agents. If we have pick 1, take Tua. If we're drafting at 3 or 4, either trade the pick to a QB needy team or take Young or the Georgia tackle.
sparky151
If Mo Sanu is worth a late 2nd round pick, then AJ is probably worth a first to a team like the 49ers.

A lot of people are really under rating what AJ Green would get in the open market...

It certainly helps us drive up the price. There is a major difference though between the two given Green's age, injury history, and contract expiring this year. If he does go, which I don't think he will, it will be for no less than a 1st in 2020.

Sanu is signed through 2020, and for pretty cheap. Green is only signed through this year, and a new deal will be expensive. Green is also hurt, and a one year rental. Those things are major factors in compensation. Which is why he won't be traded.

But the Bengals are just bad, and all the good players are playing bad. We've seen Dalton play well on a good team. We've seen Teddy play well on a good team. We haven't seen Teddy play well on a bad team, and i predict it would be a train wreck. It's the wrong move to sign him during the offseason. Just like it would have been to roll with McCarron after his similar short stint in 2015.

You're talking about an internal guy who is cheap and knows the system so the staff might be able to predict his success, versus a guy who isn't cheap and coming from somewhere else who has no history there and therefore much less to information to see potential results. We could have signed a much better player, Jesse James, for what we're paying CJ. Gio is a backup RB. Those aren't worth 5 mil per year. Yes, a team trading for AJ would probably like to reach an extension with him. But he's not in line for a pay raise after missing so many games in recent years. He's obviously past the peak of his career but still capable of making plays when healthy. The Bengals probably got calls from the Patriots and 49ers about Green before they made trades for other players. Maybe the Packers are interested? There are several teams which are looking to get to the top and might pay well for a top player.
