There are always ways to make the cap work, but this one is pretty tight...

CHI would have to eat some cap space for those released players, somewhere around $ 4 M in dead money
They only have 37 players under contract for the cap numbers you cited. Even at league minimum, they'll need another $ 7-8 M to hit the 51 player threshold
(They won't have to spend as much on their draft class though)  They need operating cash to get through the 2020 season $7 M

Add those up and we can subtract 18M from your 33 M number and that leaves only $ 15 M to pay Cam. That's probably doable on a multi-year deal, but its not enough to cover his current 2020 salary.

I'm not sure Cam is going to want a 1 year prove-it deal (his current contract) and not sure CHI is willing to make that move either. I think both parties are going to want a longer commitment, with some upside for Cam if he's all the way back. Shared risk
Best guess is that Cam wants a 2- 3 yr extension and some guaranteed signing bonus money up front.

The going rate for NFL QBs is $ 22 M/yr for Foles and Flacco in recent deals, Cam is going to want at least that.
(All of this is predicated on a full recovery and a great workout)

If Newton is available, the Bears won't be the only bidder for his services and they currently don't have a 3rd or a 4th in 2020.

The dead money is already factored into my calcs - as it was only the money saved that was added to the total of new space, the dead money was left in the cap totals.   So we're closer to 19-20M, but either way, yes, it's a tight fit.    Entirely fair point on CHI's 2020 3rd/4th not being there, though.   That will make it trickier.

He is saying that cam was foolish to hide the injuries from the Panthers and try to play through a goddamn lisfranc injury in his foot this year.

he was also was foolish enough to continue to play last season when it was painfully obvious that his shoulder was seriously injured.

Ignorant was the wrong word, but the fact remains, cam has been his own worst enemy thinking he is Superman

Did you say the same thing about Luck for playing through his shoulder injury in 2015/2016?  That he was his own worst enemy?  If I recall, everyone praised him for his toughness and blamed Colts for not finding protection for him until it’s too late.

Newton is asked to run the ball a lot because the WRs were usually bad and the OL is often terrible, but when he gets hurt and plays through it, it’s because he’s too foolish.

It’s just a dumb narrative.  Should Cam have just sat himself out?  Sure, I guess.  But blaming him for his injuries, when it’s the team that always had him in less than desirable situations?  Come on now.

I actually remember both - people blamed the Colts for not protecting him correctly, people blamed Luck for not protecting himself and thinking of the long term.

RGIII also comes to mind, people placed blame on him and the Redskins for trying to play on a seriously injured knee.

I contend it's a grey area - players need to know when they're posing risks to themselves, teams need to be more proactive in protecting their assets, etc.

Being from the Charlotte area and knowing a lot of folks still there, it seems the vast majority of Panther fans want to move on from Cam. I heard a second hand account about a family (who I know but didnt hear directly from them) that made the trip to London and participated in the pregame festivities with David Tepper and his GF/significant other, and they said that everyone there was telling Tepper to fire Rivera and move on from Cam. Doubt he actually puts weight towards what fans say, but there is a lot of sentiment from the fans.

Also Andy Dalton was a really good QB for a few years who put up some good stats on some stacked Bengals teams

When were the Bengals stacked??

I mean you can also say that things would be a lot different if Cam had AJ Green, Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu at WR during those years. Can you name 1 WR that Cam had that are in the same caliber???

Steve Smith was great for a few years. Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn were solid as #2s; Kelvin Benjamin wasn't terrible; Jerricho Cotchery was at least what Sanu was...  Newton had receivers.  He couldn't throw; that was the problem.

I'll say the Bengals certainly had more continuity at the position, and AJ was much better than any of these guys, but this notion that Cam never had any receivers is nonsense.  And just a hunch, my guess is most of the established WRs in the league probably didn't want to play with Cam.

He also had a top 5 TE in Olsen.

Cam Newton is a way better QB than Andy Dalton (when healthy and could run).  Just thought it was interesting how close their passing numbers are since they were both drafted in the same year, and now look like they might both be done with their current franchises (Dalton obviously more than Cam).

You guys actually think I'm defending Dalton?  I'm not that crazy...

Career wise, I'd probably give Cam the nod, but to say he's 'way' better is a bit of a stretch for me, in fact, if consistency is a factor, I'd probably lean to Dalton.  And if we're just talking passers, it's clearly Dalton.

Then factor in that Dalton was a 2nd rounder; Newton was picked #1 overall.  Sure he had the MVP season, but if you look at Newton's career year by year, I don't know how you can honestly say he's lived up to expectations....Not counting this year, 5 of his 8 seasons were mediocre at best, whereas Dalton was a steady top 12-15 QB for most of his career.

Then look at the difference in the way that the media treated Dalton compared to Cam.  For most of his career, Dalton was treated like some placeholder, who was holding the team back, whereas Newton was constantly praised for meager accomplishments, and was almost always given the benefit of the doubt when things went south.

Ted Ginn's career year was literally with Cam. Kelvin Benjamin definitely was terrible. There's a reason he's out of the league at 28 without having a career ending injury or a series of injuries. Jerricho Cotchrey was on the back end of his career by the time he came to Carolina.
