REBUILDING THE LIONS IN 2020

2019 Cap Space to Rollover: $19M

2020 Cap Space = $42M

TOTAL 2020 CAP SPACE = $61M

There's a decent amount of cap space available without any major re-signings coming up

TRADE

Darius Slay - 2020 1st + 2020 3rd = $10,500 New Cap; $2.9M Dead Cap

Jarrad Davis - 2020 4th Rd = $1.96M New Cap; $1.5M Dead Cap

CUT

Rick Wagner (June 1st Designation) - $9M New Cap; $2.9M Dead Cap

Damon Harrison (June 1st Designation) - $9.25M New Cap; $2.5M Dead Cap

Total Cap Space: $61M

Trade: $10.5M

Cut: $18.25M

Total New Cap Space = $89.75M

This amount will put the Lions in roughly the 6th most cap space to work with in FA against:

1) IND

2) MIA

3) BUF

4) HOU

5) DAL

6) DET

If the Lions were to restructure Matthew Stafford, it would open up another $13M+ according to OTC and it would bump us up to the third spot. If they go this route, this would eliminate any chance they can trade Stafford this season if things go south.

RE-SIGNINGS

  • Graham Glasgow, OG - 3 Years - $9.2M Cap Hit in 2020
  • Danny Amendola, WR - 1 Year - $5.5M Cap Hit in 2020
  • A'Shawn Robinson, DT - 3 Years - $5M Cap Hit in 2020
  • Christian Jones, OLB - 2 Years - $2.29M Cap Hit in 2020 (Wasn't a move that I would make but he's coming back, so it is what it is)
  • Rashaan Melvin, CB - 2 Years - $2.75M Cap Hit in 2020
  • JD McKissic, RB - RFA Tender Original Round - $2.1M Cap Hit in 2020
  • Jeff Driskel, QB, 1 Year - $1M Cap Hit in 2020
  • Don Muhlbach, LS - 1 Year - $945,000
  • Mike Ford, CB - ERFA Tender - $660,000
  • Michael Jackson, CB - ERFA Tender - $585,000

PFF has rated Glasgow as one of our best 3 OL. His positional versatility also plays a role. Amendola has looked really good. I don't see a reason to not bring him back at a reasonable contract. McKissic is well deserving of this as an offensive weapon for this team. He went undrafted, so they may offer him the 3rd round tender just to get something back in case a team does swoop in and tries to scoop him on us. Muhlbach coming back is a given basically every year. The Lions have struggled for a long time in the secondary. Guys like Melvin, Ford and Jackson are added depth. Melvin and Ford both have had starting experience with us. It's a good place to start.

LET WALK

  • Tavon Wilson
  • Mike Daniels
  • Kenny Wiggins
  • Jermaine Kearse
  • Oday Aboushi
  • Logan Thomas
  • Miles Kilebrew
  • Darius Kilgo
  • Steve Longa

NET CAP SPACE = $89.75 M - Re-signings $30M +/- = $59.75M Available for FA

I don’t see any possibility that Snacks and Robinson are both gone. I could see one however I expect both will be back.

I had thought about keeping Robinson. It's a revision that I might adjust as I'm looking at FA and trying to be realistic. If Snacks turns the corner and the run defense improves, he could definitely be back on the roster. Heck, they could even bring back Mike Daniels on a cheaper deal if they figure he's healthy. For an aging guy that has taken a downturn and is rather costly, I just don't see the point in bringing him back. That would apply to both Snacks and Daniels. There's still a lot of season ahead to change that perspective.

Well, Snacks is playing better and Daniels is hurt again. 🤔
