NFL Draft: What do we need NOW and LATER

Thomas just doesn’t do it for me he played on stacked line. He has potential but I don’t think he’s going to just all of sudden become a technical marvel. I’d like to take him in a trade down scenario but not at 9. I think Wirfs maybe there at 9 I wouldn’t mind him I think Wirfs still has room to grow.

Some are beginning to think he's safe longer than anyone in here want to hear.

I think how Dave approaches the draft this year and what he ends up doing, is going to be pretty telling about how secure his job is going forward.  But yeah...it's almost feeling like they've decided to give him a "mulligan" on the Coughlin years, and just start him fresh again or something.  Which would be insane.  But...i think tonight and tomorrow will tell us some things about that situation.

@.Buzz Fowler also goes back to why I do no want any parts of Simmons. He is a phenom no doubt but I have reservations about this staff putting him in the right position to succeed. If we had Myles still playing mike I’d be all for it’d be like having a super charged Telvin who isn’t afraid to thump, faster and more physically imposing man child in your front 7 box paired with Allen. You’d probably have the fastest linebacking group in the league Jack and Simmons. He would cover up a lot of things for Jack. But now with Schobert it’s useless I think you take a little bit of air out of the pick when you say Simmons is going to essentially be your box safety.. I can’t rack my head around playing him at strong safety.. I think he essentially gets washed out like that kid Taylor Mays if you play him strictly at safety.

I don't see Simmons "washing out" like that.  But if you do just stick him at Strong Safety, or even Will LBer, i'm not sure that's even going to be the return you really hope for with a Top-10 sort of pick.  It's a concern, and i could see it sliding him for a lot of teams who don't really want to adapt what they do defensively, to a specific player.

He's also got the potential to be an absolute superstar...if you get him in the right situation where they are willing to commit to using him to his fullest potential and building around him.

See, I think Simmons is/can be a master of something. Only reason he got moved around was because of his good he is and that gave their D an added element.

Stick him at WLB or FS and watch him flourish imo.

Feel like Fowler didn't ever show that ability.

Simmons at FS in the NFL...and he legitimately might wash out.  He's a freaky athlete...but he's not that freaky.  It'd be a concern...but it'd also be a huge waste of what he can be (especially in our scheme), taking him away from the play and making him so much more reactive and supportive, rather than where he really shows superstar ability imo.

I think he could be a top tier WLB...but even that, is kinda limiting what he could be.  You don't set out to draft a WLB Top-10.  You're just balling up a bunch of the special things he can do...and throwing it away by putting him in a rigid role like that - even if i think he'd be excellent doing it.

I thought Cam didnt project well to guard? Doesnt have the legs for it?

I mean, it's been floated that it might be an issue with Cam.  But it was also the big discussion at that draft, that he might be a LG rather than an OT.  Plus, there have been plenty of suggestions floated that Thomas doesn't project that well to LT and a lot of teams don't view him playing there.  So...

With Ruggs he is going to need to be in an offense that’s going to blend well with what he does I’d trust a coach like Gruden to take him and place him in plays that would hide Ruggs flaws and help him create off his strengths. Ruggs is not a guy that you’re going to just plug in any offense and it’s going to be Cheetah 2.0. Not to mention within the next 2-3 years Hill isn’t going to be what he is today if he doesn’t stop takin the licks he takes.

Thats the Raiders Jon Gruden I do not want Ruggs. We don’t got the coaching.

I don't really see Ruggs as all that particularly "limited" in offensive fit.  He's not some one-trick pony.  He's an absolute burner, but he can do a lot of different things with that speed.  Frankly...the one thing i'm not totally sold on Ruggs for, is his ability to be that speed demon downfield threat that just outruns coverage, that he often seems to be typecast as for some reason.

As like every year even if I'm not happy with the pick I'll talk myself into them eventually. Then they'll make me sad for the next handful of years.

Heh.  Ain't that the truth.  ;)

Looking forward to your positivite energy hopefully balancing out myself, and probably most of the rest of the forum falling into inconsolable shambles after the picks.  As per usual.  xD

Jefferson, Fulton, and Kinlaw are the three possibilities I get legitimately stoked for at 20.

If we could somehow walk away with a combo of Lamb/Becton at 9...and somehow manage to grab Kinlaw at 20 (or even with a trade-up)...i'd be doing cartwheels away from the first round.  That'd be the sort of bigtime haul i could actually get very enthusiastic about after Day 1.
