A master filmmaker with all the state-of-the-art resources due a man who produces sci-fi and comic book blockbusters turns his attention to history with breathless, stunning results in “Dunkirk.”

Christopher Nolan's largely bloodless but profoundly harrowing war epic is the best film he's ever made.

On one hand, he has delivered all the spectacle of a big-screen tentpole, ratcheting up both the tension and heroism through his intricate and occasionally overwhelming sound design, which blends a nearly omnipresent ticking stopwatch with Hans Zimmer’s bombastic score — not so much music as atmospheric noise, so bassy you can feel it rattling your vertebrae. But at the same time, he’s found a way to harness that technique in service of a kind of heightened reality, one that feels more immersive and immediate than whatever concerns we check at the door when entering the cinema. This is what audiences want from a Nolan movie, of course, as a master of the fantastic leaves his mark on historical events for the first time.

Nolan can get a pretty pretentious, but I appreciate him pushing himself into different genres like this.

I think my dad is more hyped for this than I've ever been on anything, and that's saying a lot. Can't wait to take him to it this weekend.

Saw it in 70MM Imax.

Technically it's a god damn marvel, it should sweep the Oscars in every technical achievement category.

Story wise, it wasn't the most novel or anything, but there's a constant feeling of kineticism and it doesn't linger too long on any one thing that I appreciate.

Great movie, will definitely see again at some point.

I didnt think it was perfect but it was seamless and unrelenting in it's boot on your neck feeling of being trapped and everything going to hell.

The sound design was great, but the sound mix was not..like the last couple films Nolan has done

For those of you who have seen it.. how was Harry Styles performance?

he was fine to good for speaking parts...better with the visual acting (facial movements)

Maybe it was the IMAX I saw it in...but they didn't really do a great job sound-mixing the vocal track against the music/sound effects, a lot of his dialog I couldn't hear as well.

Really none of the younger actors had a whole lot of dialog for huge swaths of the movie
The two that did were the civilians coming over from England.

There were a couple points during the movie where I wish there was closed captioning. Between the accents and sound effects they were tough to understand at points.

I found it to be an incredibly emotional movie, no doubt partly a result of the lack of dialogue at times and that near-constant stopwatch ticking. You could really feel the fear, desperation, and hope (at varying points, of course) of the characters. The scenes with the local newspaper at the end had me a little choked up.

Overall, another home run for Nolan.
