CB Metrics (2018-19)

Here are CB metrics that I complied from 2 different sources, ProFootballReference (via SportsRadar) and PlayerProfiler (via ArmChairAnalysis). These metrics are free to anyone, just look at individual player pages on each site, however I could not find a way to view or list all of them together or rank them accordingly, so I did it myself. There are naturally some differences in their charting (ie targets), but they generally paint same picture. My excel sheet is a lot and I made no real effort to pretty it up, so here a few more relevant stats I will take and put in top 10 form. This is since 2018, including all of 2019 (except last TNF). No real cut-off for CBs I included, looked at about 60 on PP and 40 for PFR, will try to even it up when I have more time. PFR link above explains all of their numbers. For PP, burns are targets where the WR had 5 or more yards of separation. Target separation looks at the distance between CB and WR when the pass arrives. Also for PP, INTs seem to include any INTs on targets, whether or not the player in question made the INT. PFR only includes INTs that player made.

So just judging by my interpretation of the numbers the top 5 corners in the league, in no order are: TreDavious White, Stephen Gilmore, Marlon Humphrey, Richard Sherman, and Bashaud Breeland.

I'd take out Breeland and put in James Bradberry

I am  that Lattimore isn't on any of those list. This year he as gone up against some elite talent and held his own. Does this list differentiate between man and zone.

D. Hopkins

J. Jones

M. Evans

A. Cooper

D.J. Chark

T. Lockett

B. Cooks

This is also counting 2018 as was said. I can’t speak to the rest of the guys on this list but Humphrey has faced the above. I believe Evans was shadowed by another corner in that matchup last year.

But in addition to that he’s played against AB/Juju in 2018 and also Juju in 2019. He’s played against Edelman. Jarvis Landry and OBJ. Tyler Boyd and some AJ Green as well.

Last year he played a side. This year he’s traveling with the best receiver whether it’s in the slot or on the outside.

Also when another team has a receiver that starts to get hot then he’ll switch responsibilities in game and generally shut that guy down to cool him back off.

Not to say he can’t get beat, but he’s been very active. Since the Marcus Peters trade however he’s been able to just moreso settle in on one guy and not try and shutdown the hot hand.

Since the numbers were updated today, I'd like to point out just how bad Xavier Rhodes has been and why he is the worst CB in the league right now.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RhodXa00.htmhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RhodXa00.htm

He is allowing an astonishing 82.3% completion rate. Here is how that compares to the other bottom 10 CB's you listed. But want to know the worst part of it? Xavier also has a ton more targets then all of them (sorted by targets).

Xavier Rhodes: 62 targets, 82.3%, 116.7 rating

Jonathan Joseph: 52 targets, 67.3%,106.8 rating

Gareon Conley: 45 targets, 60%, 121.7 rating

Josh Norman: 42 targets, 69%, 120.7 rating

Bradley Roby: 38 targets, 60.5%, 88.3 rating

Aqib Talib: 30 targets, 60%, 117.5 rating

Patrick Peterson: 29 targets, 79.3%, 122.8 rating

Kendall Fuller: 21 targets, 76.2%, 141.4 rating

Jalen Mills: 16 targets, 62.5%, 71.6 rating

The combination of targets, astronomical completion percentage and that QB rating is just mind mindbogglingly bad. The lower targeted guys can be ignored to a point since one bad play can heavily skew the numbers but Rhodes has the volume.

The fall of Rhodes from a few years ago to now is almost Nnamdi Asomugha like. Not saying he was ever as good but he was damn elite for a few years and a shut down corner but 2 years later from his height he is arguably the worst CB in the league.

At least with Nnamdi he was 30, his 8th year in the league I believe, and he had the excuse of being put into a new system playing a different role than he did the few years prior. Rhodes is in a whole different level of bizarre to me since he was elite in that 2017 season shadowing #1s and playing press man all the time. Then suddenly in year 6, at 28 years old, his play drops off and it seems to have only gotten worse. Nagging injuries but no major injury you can identify that would rob him of athleticism. Age hits everyone differently I guess, or maybe work ethic fell off, although he didn't seem like that kind of guy to me.
