Would you pull Floyd's option?

I've been ready to pull it since early last season and nothing has come close to changing my mind.

Put it on a TE, cut Gabriel and use the combined savings of his and Floyd to try and lure AJ Green for a real 1-2 combo at WR, whatever. Theoretically you could use the savings from Gabriel and Patterson (a bit over $9 mi) for the TE, Floyd's and Amukamara's $22 mil could cover another a WR and a vet on a one year deal to challenge for the #2 CB spot. You could have Green and Hooper theoretically.

QB - Tru, 2nd rounder, cheap vet

HB - Montgomery, Cohen, Nall, cheap competition

FB- Holtz

WR - Green, ARob, Miller, Wims, Ridley

TE - Hooper, Burton, (Holtz) Braunecker

- If Tru and Nagy fail with that then they need their ***** escorted off the premises and that should attract a damn fine situation for the next HC to come back to (with a 1st round pick as well for their QB)

Stack the team and invest a 2nd rounder at QB. He and Tru will combine for under $11 mil vs the cap with the rookie being at $1.5 or so. Tru will be gone in 2021 so you have that $9 mil free plus some other contract can be dropped to fix holes. And then hell if Pace and Nagy are gone in 2021 then the new HC has a young guy to compete with his guy for 3 years or trade leverage to move up.

Stack the team and go young at QB unless you find one that will generate a worthwhile ROI for their presumably massive second contract.

No because who do you replace Floyd with for next year?

For all the "Floyd doesn't generate enough sacks" people...I read something yesterday that out of all NFL edge rushers Floyd is near the bottom in actual snaps rushing the passer.

What to take out of this...he is being asked to do more than simply rush the QB.  Bears D moves him around a lot and considers him a swiss army knife depending on the match up.

I thought he had a good game against the Gmen yesterday.  He had 4 registered QB pressures and was instrumental on the the Jones fumble play near the goal line.

Sign a mid level veteran and draft someone in the 2nd round.

It is not that Floyd does not have value, but you probably cant extend him with what Mack makes.

Who would you rather have Brandon Scherff or Leonard Floyd?

I'd rather have Trent Williams than Scherff if we are talking about signing a new OL over keeping Floyd..

I think it's much harder to replace an edge rusher than it is to find a capable guard.

This topic is pointless however because we all know that Floyd isn't going anywhere next year. Pace speaks highly of him.

This is exactly why I wanted the Bears to draft Chase Winovich in this past draft. It would have provided us with a contingency plan in case we wouldn't resign Floyd in the future. Also, it helps to have a nice 3rd edge player to keep the rotations fresh when Mack or Floyd are taking a breather. However, we really needed a starting running back and the third round is when they really started to come off the board.

Either way EDGE is a premium position which requires significant capital whether it is with $ via free agency or by investing a high round draft pick. I can't recall many studs being drafted in later rounds. Floyd isn't necessarily a bad player, it's just that for the price-tag he's going to fetch when he is unrestricted it wouldn't be a great investment. I say draft a guy who you can plug into the #3 and who can challenge Floyd for the starting spot. This way we are able to minimize the loss of Floyd after 2020 while having a replacement on a rookie contract.

Would you pull his option if it meant you could take that 13 million and invest it in the offense?

Brandon Scherff

Austin Hooper

This is a easy Yes. Who cares if our left DE is a hole. I'd rather have a top 15 D and a top 17th offense than what we have now. Our D has to play perfect for us to win games.

Yup. He's miscast as a 3-4 OLB.

That's what I've been saying,  he is actually a better for as an ILB here.

Floyd might have less passrushing attempts than a lot of OLBs but I think that is more due to Pagano being aware that he sucks at it. Beating up on a terrible offense isn't  impressive,  and his propensity to disappear against good lineman is really worrisome.

Really good pass rushing 3-4 OLB are a rare breed. Yet another reason why the 3-4 isn't the best option for a defense...

Wonder if they would consider moving him to ILB to replace Trevethan and re-sign Kwit for cheaper as depth?

Just like great 4-3 pass rushing defensive ends are hard to find. It is also hard to find 4-3 under tackles like Donald.  I like the 3-4 better because it allows you to be more creative bringing pressure. Though you must have 3 really big guys up front that can stop the run. This hurts the Bears whenever Hicks are Goldman are out because they lack 3rd big guy.

Personnel issues are the biggest reason I don't care for the 3-4. I agree it allows you to be more creative in some ways, though. It also can be more effective against a West Coast type of offense.
