Roquan is better than Martinez. Don’t go putting words in my mouth.
He is not one of the best in the league though.

Maybe not one of the best but he is an ascending player who has had some monster performances this season.  His skill set should allow him to become one of the best ILB's in this league eventually.

Because he's a second year player who has missed some time?

That's the only justification I can figure out for that assertion.

Smith wasn't the same in the beginning of the season, but he turned it back on the last several games. I'll confidently say he is one of the most talented ILBs in the game, but to be one of the best he he has to be more consistent. Between his slow start this season and his sporadic play last season early on (due to missing so much time in TC and such he was still learning the system, assignments, etc) I can see why he doesn't get as much talk as some other players there. With some of the other standout seasons around him from Fuller, Jackson, Mack, Hicks, etc I can see why he gets less attention and stats piled up on this defense too.

Regardless, this is a massive loss for the Bears.

What happened in the beginning of the year when Roquan was like excused from the team or whatever for a while? That was the last I’d heard of him

As far as I know, that issue, whatever it was, has never been fully explained. So, file it as an Unsolved Mystery, I guess...

I think he's a great athlete playing on a great defense and he benefits from Mack and Hicks.  As any ILB should.

That being said, PFF isn't digging him this year.  #66 with a score of 52.5.

The aforementioned Blake Martinez is #50 with a score of 60.

Kwiatkowski (Bears ILB) is #7 with an 80.9 score.

It's just PFF but still it shows that Roquan wasn't much this past year.  Though I do think he has unreal potential.
