Elky
Born to Run is an album where context is key: Springsteen was receiving critical acclaim for his first two albums, but were complete and utter failures commercially. This album was his do or die album, so he basically threw everything and the kitchen sink. Opting for simplicity with a sound that sounds like a mix of Velvet Underground and Ramones, Is This It made alternative rock great again. Nevermind is the most famous grunge album. Ten came out first. Superunknown was the most creative. Dirt, however, is easily the darkest and heaviest of them all. To me, Alice in Chains was the grunge/metal equivalent of Joy Division: virtually all of their songs were depressing and basically cries for help from Layne Staley. Like Is This It, I love the sheer simplicity of the album. They only spent a week recording it and spent only $125 for the front cover. Instead of giving the finger to the government/society like Sex Pistols did on Never Mind the Bollocks a year later, Ramones gave it to the music industry, whereas pretentious, bloated progressive rock was all the rage. animaltested
My rotation lately. DJ Shadow - Our Pathetic Age Hip Hop + Instrumentals Pretty dope old-head hip hop. FKA Twigs - MARY MAGDALENE Electo Art-Pop Great album, should end up high on my AOTY list Clams Casino - Moon Trip Radio Hip Hop Instrumentals Clams is my dude. Couple of misses here, but overall pure Clams Sudan Archives - Athena R&B - Soul Another fantastic album. Again, should be high on my AOTY list Michael Kiwanuka - KIWANUKA Soul Dope album. Daniel
The Money Store, Madvillainy, and Aquemini are in my regular rotation. Pretty much the entire Beatles and Zepp discography too. As for what I’ve listened to lately, Tom Waits’ Big Top, Mark Kozelek’s Perils from the Sea, and Isis’ Oceanic.

animaltested
Algiers - There Is No Year : Alt-Rock Awesome album. If more rock artists dabbled in audio exploration like Algiers has, it wouldn't be a dead genre. Bombay Bicycle Club - Everything Else Has Gone Wrong ; Alternative Not sure how I feel about this one yet. Kinda fun, kinda jang-oly. Angel Olsen - All Mirrors ; Alternative; Singer Songwriter Slept on this one in 2019. Pretty dope album. Just wish it committed to strings more than it did. Pinegrove - Marigold : Gave up on this one. Its got that Country-Folk thing going which Indie is just obsessed with currently. Yuck Alexandra Savior - The Archer ; Kinda forgettable, nothing stands out, sorta boring Mura Masa - RYC ; loved his previous album, this one is a dud. animaltested
Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline : Singer Songwriter Definitely an earworm. I really enjoy the low key acoustic with percussion vibes, but not a huge fan of the "psychedelic Rock sounds" thrown in as bridges. Feels cheesy and out of place. I blame Toro Y Moi and Tame Impala for this. This sound is so damn ubiquitous these days. A lot of self deprecating lyrics here, most of the songs are about how Andy is a beta boyfriend that cant save his relationships. 070 Shake - Modus Vivendi ; Art Pop - R&B 070 Shake sounds like a mix of Charlie XCX and Frank Ocean. I dig the sound and melodic diversity here. Anna of the North - Dream Girl ; Alt Pop Sorta bedroom pop ish, so obviously getting some Lorde-Lana-Billie vibes here. What is most interesting is the heavy CityPop, Vaperwave vibes from the production. Albums not sticking: Wolf Parade - Thin Mind : Album sounds dated, like 2008 all overagain. Not really my thing. Okay Kaya - Watch This Liquid Pour Itself - Very much a Zoomer album. Super cringy album, not a fan. Holy F*** - Did a brief run-through and nothing sonically stuck with me. Might not go back. IDK. Daniel
After the Grammys, I've been listening to Igor again. Not the best rap album of the year (Hiding Places), but it's good stuff.
animaltested
J - Hus - Big Conspiracy ; Brit Rap Hus doesn't sound like your run of mill brit rapper - grime artist. Sounds more American in his style and production. This album is really growing on me. Destroyer - Have We Met ; Alternative Kaputt is one of my transformative albums. None of the subsequent albums have gripped my like Kaputt did. Overall I like this album, and it should grow on me the more I listen to it. Francis Quinlan - Likewise ; Alternative Singer Songwriter vibes here, a bit jangoly, but overall I am enjoying it. Albums not sticking: Squarepusher - Be Up a Hello ; Electronic Immediate revulsion upon first listen. I despise chip tune, and this is it in a very raw form. Just reminds me the awful 2009-2011 gamer culture. Dudes with Zelda shirts, 1UP wristbands, obsessed with pixel art, ranDUMB memes; listening to chiptune all day.
