Thelonebillsfan
I grade it same curve as a splitter, same basic concept just with knuckle action making it tumble more sharply than a good splitter. They're functionally the same pitch you just slightly alter your release point and deepen your grip to palm it.

Yeah comparing him to Daisuke is straight up ignorant and an extremely lazy narrative. 22 years old. He's been a legitimate prospect since he was in high school. The Red Sox tried to sign him when he was 18, IIRC. He was so good he almost skipped the NPB altogether, I don't think that's ever been done. He's got size, explosive fast ball with movement, and at least two other 70-80 pitches. Not to mention he's extremely athletic. I'm serious when I say this guy single handily can flip the status, or the future status of the AL East by his decision. If he goes to the Yankees? They're the team to beat for the foreseeable future. Otani, Severino, and Gray would be an unreal 1-3. If he goes to the Red Sox? Sale, Otani, Pomeranz, Price? Ridiculous. I didn't expect him to come over when the details of the new CBA broke. I'm shocked he's leaving so much money on the table. But I could not be more excited to see where he lands. Please god, don't be the Yankees.

There is no other forkball here to hold up as average or other grades on the scale. You can grade it against other breaking balls.
redsoxsuck05
Daisuke wasn't nearly as mediocre of a prospect as you guys are saying.
DalCowboyzRule
It'll be the Rangers, Mariners, Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees or Cubs here. I would love it if our ownership said eff it and brought Otani here and gave Yu his $200 million to come back. If we're going to suck for the next 3 years at least let them be fun. Forge
Add the Giants to the list of potential suitors, though the cash that they can offer is limited. Bobby Evans is in Japan to personally scout him.

The usual teams (Dodgers/Yanks/Red Sox/Cubs/Mariners/Rangers) are probably the only ones with a shot at him; given the record-breaking "2nd year extension" he's bound to receive. But other than that, nobody knows. Will the AL teams promise him DH time? Will an NL team (foolishly) promise him some OF time? Does he want to go where there have been plenty of Japanese players before, or does he want to forge his own path? Does he try and work out a package deal with Darvish this offseason? The only thing we know for certain is that the spending restrictions aren't going to hurt anyone with Otani. He'll get his money.

Has he given any indication that he even wants to field once he gets here? Like, does he enjoy playing defense when he isn't pitching? Or is that another mystery? I think he would like to play both ways if possible. However, he has some serious swing and miss already in Japan. That's not gonna get better over here. NewAge
I think the Rangers might be the early favorites, personally.
