NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans placed kicker Ryan Succop on injured reserve on Wednesday and signed his replacement, Greg Joseph, from the Carolina Panthers' practice squad.

Succop started training camp on IR due to a knee injury. He was activated in Week 9 against the Panthers and but was unable to convert any of his three field goal attempts in that game and has made just 16% of his attempts (1-for-6) since his return, far below his 82% career average.

Although it was clear that Succop wasn't fully healthy, he refused to use injuries as an excuse.

"I am out here battling," Succop said after the Titans' 24-21 loss in which his 45-yard field goal attempt was blocked. "I am doing everything that I can. Unfortunately, it just hasn't been as good as it needs to, obviously."

The Titans have a 44.4% field goal percentage this season, which is 22.3 percentage points worse than the next-worst team (Jets at 66.7%). Joseph joins Succop, Cairo Santos and Cody Parkey as Titans kickers this season. Tennessee also released kickoff specialist Ryan Santoso on Tuesday.

Joseph was good on 85% (17-of-20) of his field goal attempts with the Cleveland Browns last season. He also had 47 touchbacks.

44.4% is absolutely pathetic and inexcusable. The Titans have lost a few games this season due to missed field goals, and while the kickers do take some of the fault, the inability of the front office to address and correct the issue has resulted in the Titans' playoff hopes looking slim as a result. While there may be numerous factors that contribute to missing the playoffs (Mariota...), the kicking game has played a big role and could prove to be costly.

Any word on Greg Joseph's range, or why he wasn't retained by Cleveland and wound up on the Carolina PS?

I think he was a work in progress. He looked terrible at first even when he made kicks. The ball just came off his foot heading sideways a lot or low line drive knucklers. He seemed to have a capable leg so may just needed mechanics worked out and maybe he worked those out. It is a fragile position so I dunno, we'll see I guess.

Not sure. He's ripped, though.

He was poached from the XFL by the Panthers, but since he was only part of the practice squad, he still would've been playing on the Dragons in the spring if the Titans hadn't stolen him. Looks like he won't be playing with them now.

What's going to happen now when Chase Litton crosses midfield every drive if they don't have a Hall of Fame kicker anymore?
