Misconceptions Regarding The Tennessee Titans Franchise

Does anyone seem to notice the common misconceptions regarding the Titans when it comes to opposing fans and fanbases?

I'm not gonna say all do it because there are some bright folks out there that know their football but there are a lot of these opposing fans/fanbases tend to believe or think the Titans are among the worst teams in the NFL also some media does it too as some writer for NFL.COM named Adam Rank predicted a 2-14 record for the Titans this past September.

I've wondered if its something to do with coming from a small market.

Also I've noticed on a regularly basis that the Titans regularly get lumped in with the Jaguars,Bucs,Browns,Raiders,Bills,Dolphins,Jets.

The Titans worst stretch in their 21 year history was four straight losing seasons 2012-2015 but before that and after were playing mostly winning football.

Sure we had a streak of 4 losing seasons and at one time or another all teams go through down times but the only thing is we didn't have anything as terrible like the Jaguars,Bucs,Browns,Raiders,Bills,Dolphins,Jets.

Do the Titans deserve to be lumped in with teams like.....

Oakland (16 losing seasons out of the last 17 seasons), Browns (16 losing seasons out of the last 17 seasons), Jaguars (11 losing seasons out of last 12 seasons), Bills (17 losing seasons out of the last 19 seasons),Bucs (no playoff football the last 12 regular seasons,1 winning season over past decade ),Jets (9 losing seasons out of last 10 seasons),Dolphins (10 losing seasons out of the last 11 seasons).

Only thing is our team is not a perennial bottom feeder and never has been in their 21 year history.

In fact not only are the Titans headed for their fourth straight winning season and second playoff berth in three years not to mention recent playoff win in Jan. 2018 at KC but the Titans are also close to top ten in overall wins from 1999 their first season thru 2019 their twenty first year in existence.

For instance from '99 thru the final week of '19 if the Titans win they'll have 179 wins (regular/postseason) and will be tied for 11th in wins if Dallas wins too which is likely and just two wins from cracking the top ten where Minnesota will be 10th with 181 wins if they beat the Bears this coming Sunday.

Over past 21 seasons only 10 teams have more overall wins (regular/postseason) than Tennessee they are....

Patriots 275 wins

Steelers 226 wins

Colts 223 wins

Packers 216 wins

Ravens 212 wins

Eagles 208 wins

Seahawks 204 wins

Broncos 194 wins

Saints 194 wins

Vikings 180 wins

Titans 178 wins

Cowboys 178 wins

Yet for some reason most opposing fans, fanbases and even media seem to think or even portray the Titans as some downtrodden team when nothing could be further from the truth. Small market yes, Losers though the answer is absolutley not.

I just put the truth out there which is over the past twenty one years the Titans are close to top ten in overall wins right up there with the Vikings,Saints,Seahawks,Broncos, etc.  not to mention the fact that the team is headed for its fourth straight winning season and second postseason berth in three seasons that includes a postseason win at Kansas City in January 2018.

Also over the past four seasons the Titans have beat New England,Baltimore,Philly,Green Bay,Seattle,Denver,New Orleans,Dallas,Kansas City, etc.

Does that sound like a franchise that regularly loses games and are bottom feeders?

In fact during the Titans 21 year history they ranked 7th in wins overall from 1999-2011 regularly having winning seasons, making the postseason, winning the division, they also won 13 games in three seperate seasons and had the NFL best record on two seperate occassions not to mention going to two AFC title games and one Super Bowl as well.

The team actually led the NFL in wins during their first five years '99-'03 led by QB Steve McNair and RB Eddie George and a good GM Floyd Reese who knew how to draft good players. The Titans also had what the NFL considers one of the best plays in history the Music City Miracle which led to a win vs Buffalo in the final seconds.

During that same time frame '99-'11 the Titans had 2 NFL Rookie of the Year players DE Jevon Kearse who set a new rookie sack record thats stood for two decades and QB Vince Young who led the NFL in comeback wins with five his rookie year including a 21 point fourth quarter comeback win.

They also drafted RB Chris Johnson who had the fastest speed ever for a player in history at the NFL combine. Johnson rushed for over 2,000 yards in 2009 and set numerous records as well as breaking the record total yardage gained in a season gaining 2,509 yards.

The Titans have had some good backup QB's including Neil O'Donnell,Kerry Collins,Matt Hasselbeck all three backups led the Titans to winning seasons and backup Billy Volek holds the NFL record for most pass yardage in back to back games with 918 total yards in 2004.

During the 2007 season at Houston our kicker Rob Bironas set a new NFL record with 8 FG's in one game with the last one being the game winner 38-36.

What was crazy is Tennessee were winning 32-7 at the start of the 4th quarter and speaking of good backup QB's Sage Rosenfels helped Texans storm back actually taking a 36-35 lead with a minute left scoring 29 unanswered points. Then with time expiring Bironas hit the game winner and set a new record.

The teams only bad stretch was 2012 thru 2015 a four year period of losing due to a GM Ruston Webster with poor evaluating skills who proved just that by drafting QB bust Jake Locker who never played consistently well which wasn't helped by poor drafting which led to the four years of losing seasons and the NFL's worst record two years running in 2014 and 2015

However they soon overcame the hard times and losing by drafting QB Marcus Mariota and hiring GM Jon Robinson.  They also did well by drafting good players like Derrick Henry,Kevin Byard,AJ Brown, etc.

In 2018 RB Derrick Henry tied the all time record set by Tony Dorsett in 1983 when he ran for 99 yards on one play,Kevin Byard has broke a few records himself when he had a 3 INT game in 2017 and that same year led the NFL in INT's. AJ Brown is on his way to being the WR with the most yards receiving as well as breaking the record for most yards per catch in 2019.

While Robinson remains a mainstay Mariota while doing well his first two years ended up struggling his last two years which forced the team to bring in Ryan Tannehill who dug the team out of an early hole Mariota created early in the 2019 season.

It is most likely that come 2020 Mariota a free agent will be gone and Tannehill who played so well he is the NFL leader passing rating as well as leading the Titans back into contention will be signed to be the teams answer at starting QB.

If the Titans beat the Texans in their last regular season game next weekend the Titans will have clinched a playoff spot for the second time in three seasons as well as achieving 4 straight winning seasons from 2016 thru 2019 which is pretty good for a GM's first four years on the job.

Not only would the Titans have 4 straight winning seasons they are also a couple wins shy of being top ten in wins over their first two decades as an NFL team 1999-2019.

BUT if you listen to opposing fanbases or some clueless media writers you'd think the Titans were bottom feeders and didn't matter.

The first stat I checked isn’t even close to being correct, which doesn’t bode well for the rest of the ones presented. You claim the Raiders have had 16 losing seasons in the past 17; whilst the truth isn’t exactly great, the actual number is 13.

Teams from smaller markets are generally ignored or undermined in the media. It’s not a new thing which has suddenly just started happening to Tennessee. I don’t think the Titans have it particularly bad or any worse than other teams who I would say have a fairly similar standing in the game (with regards to recent W/L, playoff appearances, history or size of fanbase).

I was pulling for you guys to get in the playoffs but now I hope you lose.

Not sure why, but this made me laugh.

Anyway, not exactly sure what the point of this thread is, but it seems completely unnecessary.

I'm always going to post this fact whenever I get a chance, until things change....

As of today December 26, 2019, the "Titans" record since becoming the "Titans" is 172-163, a .513 winning %. Jeff Fisher career winning % is .512.

This franchise has always been slightly above average since it's inception in 99. In 21 years as the "Titans", about half of them (10 to be exact) we've finished between 7-9 and 9-7.

Jeff Fisher was this franchise best, most well known coach and I feel his career mediocrity will forever hover over this franchise for eternity. We're forever curse to be between 7-9 and 9-7.

Why did you make your font size bigger?

Having played many a game of mafia on this site, I can tell you that means he copied and pasted.

As for the topic on hand, the problem with the Titans is that the NFL took one perfectly good NFL team (the Oilers) and split it into two franchise that no one cares about.
