Most of these cap numbers are irrelevant once the new league year starts, no? And he had to clean on a few of the players he didn't bring on. He amassed a ton of dead cap, but we weren't spending any of that money elsewhere. Gettleman is getting a lot of flack from STILL having to clean the mess left by the previous management. He has mad questionable moves, yes, and some have paid off pretty well others haven't.

I do believe this dead cap post is kinda just to keep stirring the fire. A lot of these guy aren't ones he has brought on. Solder is his big FA buy, and it didn't end well. Most of us wanted Solder at the time, his contract was just the price it took to dance.

And we’re still a mess. He’s just made a new one.

Say what you will about what our previous regime, but we were never this bad. We at least made the playoffs once and those big FA contracts were a big reason for our success in 2016.

This team is lacking in talent, like serious talent, yet we don’t get rid of the guy whose main job is to pick that talent?

....

Do you ....

Do you really think that? We were never a one or two season rebuild. Because of the situation we were placed in. He has done a good job drafting. We literally have been to playoffs twice in the last decade. He has only been responsible for two of those lost seasons, during a rebuild. Be patient, it isn't going to turn around soon. Our defense is terrible. Yes, he had to live with the moves that were made in 2016, and make bargain adds based on that. I'll give him a Solid C+ as he's been horrendous adding talent.

Gettleman didn’t embrace the rebuild. He idiotically thought this roster was still one that could compete hence why he stuck with Eli, gave Odell an extension, drafted a RB at 2 when our o-line was a mess.

If you’re gonna fire Shurmur you might as well fire Gettleman. They’re a package deal. Simple as that

As of now, as many of you know Shurmur is gone but Gettleman has been retained.  I think it will depend on who the new coach is but I don't think Gettleman is def going to be back with us next year.  If our top target is either Rhule or McDaniels and they want full control I can see Gettleman being on the chopping block.

As for the job Gettelman has done I think it has been mixed.  First and foremost he was handed an absolute dumpster fire of an operation.   This organization lost control of the team during the end of the McAdoo era.  Clearly, I have no knowledge of this but it wouldn't surprise me if he was given this job with Eli being attached as the starting QB.  He was also put in a tough position with OBJ.  I know he was the one that extended him, but the way OBJ was babied by the previous regime earlier in his career did exactly endear him to Gettleman.

As to the job he's actually done.  The bad is that he's been irresponsible with the cap and has whiffed on many free agent signings such as Solder, Conor Barwin and Golden Tate.  Also the Leonard Williams trade doesn't look great as of now.

The good is on the pro personnel level is the Markus Golden signing and the fact that he let Landon Collins walk without giving him huge money and we will likely receiver a 3rd round comp pick for him.  His drafts have also looked strong.  Granted they're probably a little inflated because our team is so bad we're forced to start young players that shouldn't be starting but I would say out of his 2 drafts with the Giants that Barkely, Hernandez, Lorenzo Carter, Bj Hill, Daniel Jones, Lawrence, Baker, Ximienes, Julian Love, Ryan Connelly, Darius Slatyon and possibly Corey Ballentine all look like players that may stick at this level.  That's a decent amount of players to acquire from 2 drafts.

Going into this offseason I do trust Gettleman to get good value out of the draft and trust him to make the correct selections.  However, what does concern me is that we will have a lot of cap room this offseason.  Can he make the correct decisions with the cap room?  I'm guessing a lot of this will clear up after we hire a coach.  Other than that the rest remains to be seen.

Dead money can stick around one to two seasons depending on when the player is released or traded.  For example, Patrick Omameh was signed in 2018, released the same year accumulating 2.5 million in 2018 and 3 million in 2019.  This can be said for several of these like Eli Apple and Damon Harrison so dead money does matter and when you've accumulated that much it's just poor cap management.  So basically, the team is paying for players to play on another roster.  They were also forced to restructure some of these contracts to free up cap space.

The mess he had is exaggerated, he didn't need to switch to a 34 defense and his big issue with the offense was the line, which he's done nothing in terms of improving it.  His free agent signings and draft picks invested in that line hasn't worked out or will be free agents this year, like Mike Remmers.  Basically starting from scratch yet again.  No reason to blow the team up like he did and trading players that you sign the same year to huge extensions burns bridges to the point players aren't willing to sign with teams like this.

I posted more than just the dead money...his trading decisions definitely favored the other team and most of those trades that acquired additional picks were just used to trade away to get higher picks.

Most of us wanted Solder at the time because he was the only "true" left tackle in that free agency, and Flowers was clearly not the answer.  I don't think anyone was advocating to make him the highest paid tackle at the time of his signing.

This is a really good article. I don't agree with all of it but definitely most of it

Schefter said that Gettleman will not necessarily continue with the Giants.  Going to depend on coaching decision

He's a mixed bag. Good at drafting, terrible in free agency. I think keeping him is mostly a mistake, but I still think the talent on the roster this past year was better than the talent in NYJ and MIA for instance and we absolutely should have won more games than we did.

Would agree about the Dolphins.  Disagree about the Jets.  They're a year ahead of us.  Drafted their QB and had their spending spree last year.  They have a much better defense than us.  By the end of the year we were basically starting 3 rookies in the secondary.  I feel just like you though.  I think this is an extremely important offseason for the franchise and I trust Gettleman to draft well.  But we could have north of 80 mil in cap space and that could get ugly.

When your always picking in the top 6, I think would be hard to have a bad draft for the first three rounds.  I would prefer if Gettleman was fired just for that trade with the Jets alone. However he did provide us our QB of the future so can't kill the owners for keeping him. I just hope if next season is a failure he then gets fired, three seasons is plenty of time to turn a team into a winner.

I just don't understand the logic of these owners and with using Pat as the scapegoat is just wrong.  Similar situation to what they did with Coughlin and I'd happily take Reese back with open arms at this point, he at least provided the coach with a roster to work with.

I'm just at a loss really...everything points to Gettleman as the issue and he's the one individual they retain.  Sick to my stomach.

I mean I expected this after they allowed him to release Jenkins, figured no owner would allow him to do anything if he was on the verge of being fired.  So this comes as no surprise, I was just hopeful, but I guess after you allow someone to burn the village down and he did burn it down, that they will be looking for their own scapegoat when it's all said and done.
