I think they also get pretty compact if you have to pack it up. They definitely have their uses but fashion isn't one of them.

I don't wear them and rarely see people wear them, but the thin ones would be passable in my opinion.  As with most things jacket or coat related, proper fit/tailoring is always going to look substantially better than loose-fitting/poor-fit.  Please note, I'm in no way advocating for "skinny fit" anything.  If you've got the figure where trim fit stuff has that proper fit appearance on it, go for it, but skin-tight or thereabouts is not proper fit for anything other than workout-wear.
