Should've been done 2 weeks ago.

We didn't sign him last week because it would have guaranteed his whole year's salary.

Anyway, if Adam Gotsis plays as well as he did at times on Monday night, and Rubin can force his way into the NT rotation with Domata Peko, then we've probably upgraded two positions. Crick is a starter at DE but tbh I think Gotsis and Shelby Harris are both better players

I meant with Crick. It was pretty obvious his injury was a lot more serious and definitely not the first time he's had back issues.

I didn't hate Crick last season, and he is a nice backup caliber 34DE who is 'meh' at everything (Not good, not bad), but at this point Gotsis and Harris both offer more athletically. I was extremely pleased with the way Adam played against SD, lets hope he takes his Derek Wolfe frame and motor and adds that Derek Wolfe technique. It seems to be trending that way.

Crick was a good pass rusher in our dime defense, but was atrocious vs. the run. I'm excited to see what Harris and Gotsis can do and who emerges as the 3rd down interior rusher next to Wolfe.

Do we have the biggest D-line rotation in the league now? Four guys over 325 pounds, Wolfe and Gotsis both over 300.

Rubin being our 2nd NT makes a ton of sense.   Having only 3 DE's is really iffy though, given how Wolfe isn't likely at 100 percent, or even close.  Dude's a warrior, but we are paper thin at DE right now.    No problem signing Rubin whatsoever, but I think we really need a 4th DE (Walker is a 4-3 DE on pass downs, can't really help this year at 3-4 DE until he bulks up).

Agreed!

What is concerning is how many snaps Von and Shaq played, maybe it was our plan since we ran dime D alot with 2 DL and 2 EDGE. We gotta trust our back up EDGE rushers or at least sub them in the beginning.

Probably think Jarrett gets put on waviers, then sent back to the PS (so we can also gain an extra year of service time on his rookie deal), and Peko Jr. released again, when Kerr returns.  Then Kerr can rotate in at NT when needed, but provide that 4th DE too for 1st down/run situations at least (then go to 4-3 with Walker on passing downs).  We definitely need the depth.

With the Rubin signing and Crick going to IR, I expect that Zach Kerr will be almost exclusively playing 5-technique. He was listed at NT after final cuts, but at that point Peko Sr was the only Nose Tackle on the roster. We now have Peko Sr, Rubin and Jarrett on the 53 and Peko Jr on the practice squad (He may well take Jarrett's place when he's fully healthy)

Zach Kerr is expected to play on Sunday to we have four healthy DEs

DE: Wolfe, Gotsis, Harris, Kerr

NT: Peko Sr, Rubin, Jarrett

Yeah, Kerr coming back helps fill out the line with bodies a bit more. It's still ridiculously patchwork, but at least we have 4 guys now. I actually like Rubin. He's a solid run defender. I will say, Gotsis did a helluva job in run defense, although he still had his moments, but he looked more adept than last year. PFF gave him a stellar grade for the game, FWIW. I'm hopeful he stays healthy and improves. Big Rubin fan though, this is a solid signing and should also keep Peko fresher than he would otherwise be.

That said, it's all but a certainty that DL is a Top 2 round pick again. Demarcus Walker should eventually be able to rotate in on the line when Ray is back, but he's still a pass rush specialist. A guy like Vita Vea next year Round 1 would be stellar.
