His contract is expiring. They are not firing him and that's why this has been drawn out. They are just waiting on the contract to expire and moving on.

So he was not fired in that sense.

Doesn't his contract run at least 1 more week?

In this case, he's technically not getting fired. Though he'd obviously be open to a contract extension and the Cowboys are refusing, so there's an asterisk.

It's just annoying seeing NFL media members parrot all of the euphemisms that teams use for coaches who are getting canned. Crap like "the Browns are preparing for a future that does not involve Freddie Kitchens". Just say he got fired. They're getting close to "the Browns are choosing to give Freddie Kitchens more time to spend with his family" or "the Browns are happy to announce they have helped move up Freddie Kitchens' timeline to retirement".

Or even worse than that, the dreaded "right-size".

No coach in NFL history was better at icing their own kicker.

eh. Ive always though its stupid that people hang this over his head. His ST Coach ran up to him yelling for a timeout. So he naturally responded and called it.
