Pugger
I don't think we need the college OT rules but I wouldn't be opposed to having both teams an opportunity to possess the ball. We had a couple of OT playoff games where we never saw the ball.
EvilenFroggen
No they don’t. There are three phases to a game, not just offense.

TheGame316
There are advantages to playing defense first as well 1)If you stop them, you KNOW all you need is a FG, as soon as you're in range you can go for the win 2)If they get a FG on their possession, you know you are in 4 down football for your entire possession You have 4 downs to get 10 yards as opposed to the first team that got the ball, would have punted at some point on 4th down and you can scheme accordingly 3)You get a stop you could potentially start with better field position The disadvantage of getting the ball first is you don't know what you need. 4th and 1 from your own 40 you PUNT, 4th down in their territory you settle for a FG. Both of these give advantages to the second team in term of knowing what they will need to tie and extend OT or win The ONLY advantage the first team gets is that if they get a TD, it's over Edited January 5, 2020 by TheGame316

LeotheLion
The Saints knew what the OT rules were and seemed so content to tie in regulation vs go for a TD. They took a risk playing it safe
Coffee & Contemplation
I never like a team getting beat in OT after not getting to possess the ball, but I don't think the current format can be reworked in a way that won't still infuriate people at times. There's no perfect solution... aside from turning the game into a hail mary shootout. Each team gets five hail marys, alternating. That would be hilarious and great. There are no laws, rule, or ball. First punter to surrender loses. I mean, I'm gonna hire GSP as my punter to take their guy out before anyone else gets to the 25. If you're willing to deal with a non-punting specialist punter, that's just good strategy.

Bold assumption he isn't already a punting specialist.
Malik
Coaches need to stop having their defense play so soft during the first position of OT because they're scared of being killed by 1 big play. You wouldn't play any other drive in the game like that. There's no reason you should start your OT prepared to lose if you don't get the ball first

Fair, in retrospect I'll add a provision banning MMA guys. The point of this is to watch a punter have his limbs ripped off on national TV, so any punter who can defend himself violates the spirit of the game.
Jlowe22
I don’t prefer anything be influenced by the flip of a coin, but I haven’t really heard any outstanding alternatives either. At the end of the day though, you let a team drive the length of the field for a td, you deserve to lose.
