Mock Draft 1.0 (1/7)

 

1. Cincinnati Bengals - Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

Not much needs to be said here. Burrow is a stud and the Bengals are going to take him to be their next QB.

2. Washington Redskins - Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State
Again, not much needs to be said. Young is an elite talent at a premium position and the Redskins will have no problem running this pick to the podium.

3. Detroit Lions - Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio State
This is where things start to get interesting. The Lions definitely need help on defense and take who I have as the next highest ranked defensive player. Okudah is a future shut down CB in my opinion. Darius Slay struggled slightly this year so taking Okudah means they'll either have the guy who can replace Slay if he continues to struggle or they have a dominant CB duo if Slay returns to form.

4. New York Giants - Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
David Gettleman loves to build through the trenches and takes the best OT in the class here. The Giants whiffed on Solder a couple of years ago and are still looking for the blindside protector for their QB. If they want Daniel Jones to ever succeed they need to protect him.

5. Miami Dolphins - Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
Another easy selection here with Tagovailoa. Despite his injury I still expect some team to jump on him early. There are few better teams for that than the Dolphins, who are still at least a couple of years away from actually contending for anything. The Dolphins can ride the Fitzmagic train for another year as Tagovailoa gets himself back into football shape.

6. Los Angeles Chargers - Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
The Chargers just miss out on Tagovailoa here but grab Herbert instead. I seriously considered giving them an OL like Wirfs here but at the end of the day QB is the most important position in football. If they like Herbert here they will take him even if it is probably a bit early.

7. Carolina Panthers - Derrick Brown, INT, Auburun
The Panthers luck into good value here. Brown was someone I somewhat considered at the third overall pick. Getting him here is especially nice because it fills one of Carolina's biggest needs on the interior of their DL. When a team gets an intersection of BPA and area of need, that's always great.

8. Arizona Cardinals - Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
The Cardinals get one of the best players in the draft all the way down at the 8th pick. The teams picking before just had other needs and Jeudy slips. Who knows if Larry Fitzgerald is coming back next year or not. Either way Jeudy can come in and play well right away next to him or in his place. Despite picking three receivers in the draft last year the Cardinals still could stand to get more weapons for Kyler Murray.

9. Jacksonville Jaguars - CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
The Jaguars also get a great WR here. Lamb can come in an be a true number 1 receiver for this team that could use some playmakers for whatever QB starts next year.

10. Cleveland Browns - Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa
The Browns absolutely have to grab an OT here. Luckily for them they're gonna get a good one here in Wirfs, who could easily go a bit higher in the top 10 due to need and positional value. Like the Giants, they absolutely have to protect their young QB.

11. New York Jets - Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Following the theme here, the Jets add Wills to their OL. Not only will this help Darnold stay on his feet, but Wills is a strong run blocker and will be able to open up some holes for Le'Veon Bell too.

12. Las Vegas Raiders - Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
This is one of the easiest picks of the mock so far. The Raiders could use some speed and playmaking on their defense and Simmons will bring that in spades. Simmons just feels like a Raider and I mean that in a good way.

13. Indianapolis Colts - Javon Kinlaw, INT, South Carolina
With Kinlaw, the Colts will be adding an athletic interior disruptor. He has an inconsistent motor at times but can be a play maker on defense despite that issue. I could see him being better than Derrick Brown if he ends up in the right situation and puts in the work.

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Grant Delpit, S, LSU
The Buccaneers have a very young secondary that certainly has a lot of potential and I think they'll take a big step forward there as is. Adding Delpit to the mix however gives them a physical presence in the secondary that I think they're missing. He'll fit in well there with that young crew.

15. Denver Broncos - Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
I really wanted to give the Broncos an offensive lineman but didn't feel comfortable taking any of the remaining ones here. I went instead with one of my favorite players in the draft, Kristian Fulton, to help out the secondary. Rumors have been floating for a while that Chris Harris could be traded but even if he doesn't Fulton can come in and have a role with this defense. 

16. Atlanta Falcons - A.J. Epenesa, EDGE, Iowa
This guy is exactly what the Falcons need. Epenesa is better than his numbers indicated this year as he was double and even triple teamed often. He is a powerful edge setter who can also get to the QB. The Falcons lack EDGE talent despite having invested in it in previous drafts so they continue to search for a solution to that issue.

17. Dallas Cowboys - Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
This may be a bit higher than some others have him but I like McKinney and his versatility a lot and think he can bring some energy and youth to a secondary that might need it depending on what happens with Byron Jones. The Cowboys have needed an upgrade at safety for a while anyways.

18. Miami Dolphins (via Pittsburgh) - K'Lavon Chaisson, EDGE, LSU
I really thought about taking a RB here but there are plenty of good ones in this class so instead I think Brian Flores turns to the defense to add Chaisson. Chaisson holds up in the run pretty well for a guy his size and has the athleticism to get to the QB when asked as well.

19. Las Vegas Raiders (via Chicago) - Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama
Ruggs would be a great fit for the Raiders, who could use a playmaker in their offense. Ruggs has speed for days but he's not just a speed guy. I think he can eventually develop into a true number 1 receiver.

20. Jacksonville Jaguars (via Los Angeles) - Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama
It feels a little bit lazy to mock a CB here at the pick the Jags got for trading away Jalen Ramsey but it is a big need for them and Diggs is decent value here. He didn't play CB until college so he's still relatively new at the position but is already really good.

21. Philadelphia Eagles - Laviska Shenault Jr., WR, Colorado
Everyone knows that the Eagles desperately need some pass catchers and Shenault seems like a good fit for them him with his ridiculous playmaking abilities.

22. Buffalo Bills - Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson
Buffalo lacks size and physicality in their WR group and Higgins would fill that role nicely. It's always wise to provide weapons to a young QB like Josh Allen.

23. New England Patriots - Yetur Gross-Matos, EDGE, Penn State
This was a pick I struggled with a bit. I obviously wanted to get them an offensive weapon like a TE or WR but I don't feel that any are necessarily worth this pick. Instead I went to the defense where I gave Belichick an athletic and versatile DL to play with and mold.

24. New Orleans Saints - Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU
Michael Thomas is arguably the best WR in football right now but Reagor would bring another dimension to the Saints offense with his speed. He essentially is Ted Ginn as a player so we already know that he has a place in this offense.

25. Tennessee Titans - Terrell Lewis, EDGE, Alabama
The Titans defense is already pretty strong, especially with the emergence of this year's first round pick Jeffery Simmons when he came back from injury. Lewis will add another pass rusher across from Harold Landry, giving the Titans a good young duo of pass rushers going into the future.

26. Minnesota Vikings - Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford
The Vikings pass defense did improve as the year went on but it is still not that great. They have a couple of important FA's in the secondary and Xavier Rhodes has regressed so getting a guy like Adebo here would hopefully help alleviate some of those issues.

27. Miami Dolphins (via Houston) - D'Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
A RB may seem like a luxury pick in the first round for a team with as many needs as the Dolphins but when Ryan Fitzpatrick is your leading rusher on the year, RB is probably one of your biggest needs. Swift is not my personal number 1 RB for this draft but he's still immensely talented and should bring some balance to the offense.

28. Seattle Seahawks - Julian Okwara, EDGE, Notre Dame
Both Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah are going to be FA's at the end of the season so the Seahawks will need to bolster their EDGE group one way or another. Okwara is an underrated prospect in my eyes who would fit well here.

29. Kansas City Chiefs - Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson
The Chiefs have bigger needs than RB but when I think of the damage Etienne could do in this offense, I can't help but mock him here. Etienne is a threat to the break it to the house at any moment.

30. Green Bay Packers - Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
I tried to fit in a WR here and there were a couple of options if I'd chosen to reach a little bit, but with this being such a deep WR class I felt like the Packers could probably wait a little bit and instead look towards the defense. Murray is one of my personal favorite players of the class and should help the Packers run defense immensely.

31. San Francisco 49ers - Tyler Biadasz, C, Wisconsin
The 49ers get a steal here as I would've had no problem slotting Biadasz in the mid first round range but lack of need and low perceived positional value pushed him down. Weston Richburg tore his patellar tendon, which is a tough injury to come back from and could probably have been replaced anyways.

32. Baltimore Ravens - Curtis Weaver, EDGE, Boise State
The Ravens are not in the best spot here as their needs don't really match up with what's available. Like with the Packers I thought about reaching slightly for a WR but instead settled on reaching slightly for an edge guy. Weaver is a solid player who I'm not sure will ever be elite, but will probably be a solid starter.[/spolier]

I could definitely see the Vikings going CB in round one, especially if they decide to cut Rhodes to free up cap space.

Do you think they're likely to resign Trae Waynes and/or Mackensie Alexander? Because I figured CB would be a target regardless.

I expect them to keep one of the two, though with Hughes keeping on getting banged up, so CB would probably still be a target.

I would be upset if we take a WR over Simmons based on this WR class. I also am not the biggest fan of Diggs from what I've watched.

Considering big guys are our biggest issue I'd be shocked if those were the top two selections barring a big FA class of OL/DL/LB.

You have to go back to 2006 the last time the Packers took a non-premium position in the first round.  Before that, you'd have to go back to 2003.  The Packers have historically always stuck with their core positions (OT, DL, EDGE, and CB) with their premium picks.  While Kenneth Murray certainly fits a need, they'd be breaking about a decade or so worth of history in the process.

This guy is exactly what the Falcons need. Epenesa is better than his numbers indicated this year as he was double and even triple teamed often. No complaints on the Falcons end  as AJ is the 2nd best edge rusher in this draft and i agree he is much better than his numbers show.  I'll gladly take him as i have im as a top 10 player and 16 would be very good value at our top need.  The only way i really pass on him is if a guy like Simmnons fell to us who i have as a top 5 player at all a need.

For MIA, clearly Tua is going to be the pick, as long as no one jumps ahead of us. 
I'm good with the Chaisson pick!
But I think i'd rather have Biadasz for the final pick in round 1. Justification? clearly we need to rebuild the OL in the worst way AND Swift, Etienne, Dobbins, Taylor and Akers are MOST LIKELY all available in the 2nd. Plenty of RBs in this draft to find one. i think we with all the salary cap we have we will fill in some OL and potentially chase RB. But, draft wise, I think Biadasz is the better pick for our needs in the 1st.

Fulton isn't a bad player. Not at all, but his tackling issues are something to look for because Fangio wants his CBs to tackle and that's not negotiatable.

I like Lamb better than Simmons as a prospect (although obviously both are really good) but Simmons is a guy I considered there so I'll keep that in mind for the next one.

Fair enough but I'm always wary of these types of arguments. Go back to 2013 and people were adamant that the Steelers wouldn't take a pass rushing LB round 1 because they hadn't since 1991 but lo and behold they took Jarvis Jones. Then Bud Dupree in 2015. Then TJ Watt in 2017. Looking historically back to an old regime I don't think tells us much about this current regime.

Yeah, pass rush has been a big need for a while and Epenesa I think is going to fit in really well there if that's where he ends up

Biadasz was definitely someone I considered at that selection but like I said with the Fitzpatrick thing, RB just seems like a dire type of need. You are right though about there being a lot of RB talent in this class, even beyond those guys you mentioned too.

I agree that it is important, but I think we can still get Swift with our 1st pick in round 2 while grabbing one of the best Center prospects. Win-Win!!
If we wait on it, I just don't know if someone like Creed Humphrey would be avail in round 2 by the time we pick, either. Tough decision....
I'm sure we will look at OL & a few 'specific' FA RB's prospects in FA (shhhderrickhenryshhhhnothingtoseehere)! haha!  Lord knows we have the cap space to accommodate! I'm also wondering why people are sleeping on Zack Moss/RB.
But, if we don't get a solid RB in FA - I still like the idea of RB in round 2....we will still have access to a really good one! But, that's just me. Happy new year and thanks for taking the time on your mock!
