Here’s a random thought.

Would you rather have Robinson and Miller or Jeudy and Ruggs?

Alabama had a crazy 2019 WR group for a college team.

Does that mean Tua is possibly overrated?

And Smith and Waddle. That’s 4 first round talents. Gimme those guys.

Every first round pick is a "first round talent" yet only about 25% turn out to be good players. While the jury is still out on Miller, I'd much rather have him and Robinson. All 4 of those Alabama guys might bust.

It is an interesting debate though. It's like in baseball where farm systems are thought of so highly, but there comes a time where those systems have to produce at the highest level. No one knows if they will or won't, so I'd take the sure thing unless a complete teardown makes sense, like how the Cubs and Sox did.

Fishbain and Jahns did a duel mock today.

Fishbain:
2. Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame
2. Terrell Lewis, EDGE, Alabama
4. Anthony Gordon, QB, Washington State
5. Harrison Hand, CB, Temple
6. John Hightower, WR, Boise State
6. Brian Cole, S, Mississippi State
7. Jon Runyan, G, Michigan
7. Tyler Huntley, QB, Utah

Jahns:
2. Josh Jones, OT, Houston
2. Antoine Winfield, S, Minnesota
4. Albert Okwuegbunam, TE, Missouri
5. Darrynton Evans, RB, Appalachian State
6. Lynn Bowden, WR, Kentucky
6. Trevis Gipson, EDGE, Tulsa
7. Cole McDonald, QB, Hawaii
7. Jake Breeland, TE, Oregon

I like Jahns' a lot.

I don't really like Fishbain's at all...  Gordon being the only early player I'm higher on....  Not super interested in Kmet or Lewis

Jahns' first 3 picks I like significantly more overall

That said, if the board breaks at all like the draft simulators do, I think there's a massively better draft possible than either of those options.

Draftnetwork's draft sim, for example, has us able to snag Niang-OT with our first pick about half the time, as well as Denzel Mims-WR, Raegor-WR, or Hamler-WR with our first pick or even our 2nd pick (for Raegor or Hamler).... I don't think I could pass that up... Mims isn't even a speed guy, but that kid could easily be our "alshon jeffery" to Allen Robinson's "Brandon Marshal"... the other two are both deeper threat guys.

Our 2nd pick guys like Isiah Wilson-RT to get Massie sent packing, Trautman-TE, or maybe Hamler-WR since he's the most likely to be there yet.

Later in the draft, I'm looking hard at Micheal Onwenu to fill that RG spot, and even if it meant not getting a stud WR like teh above mentioned guys, I wouldn't be at all upset getting Niang-OT, Wilson-OT, AND Onwenu-OG....... All 3 of those guys are OT sized people movers who would add a ton of much needed ferocity to our OL, and let us rid ourselves of bums like Leno/Massie/Coward.  People keep mentioning that we can't really evaluate Biscuit last year because of the lack of a run game, but I'd argue we couldn't really evaluate Monty or Cohen last year because of a lack of a blocking game. Get those mean mugs on the OL and I think we could really start just manhandling the LOS and see a guy like Cohen really show his value again and/or Monty get to save all his jukes for the 2nd level instead of the backfield.

The defenders I like that 2nd pick range are:

AJTerrell -CB and both Dugger-SS and Chin -SS

If we need an edge guy at OLB to either replace Floyd or add one of my Badgers looks like he could have a shot of being taken in round 2.  He's a little undersized as a pure edge guy but then so is Floyd and we're talking about this year version of a T.J Watts type.  His size may cause him to fall a bit as well but he's real bull dog type rusher.

Overview

Ascending prospect whose explosive production on the field has begun to mirror his explosive athletic traits. Baun's twitchy get-off and deep bend at the edge is nightmare fuel for Big Ten tackles and he's still at the early stages of pass rush development. He is aggressive to flow downhill in run support, has sideline-to-sideline range and is fluid dropping into coverage. He's strong but a little light as an edge-setter so teams will need to figure out how best to align him. Baun is a scheme-diverse linebacker with high-impact potential whose best days are ahead of him.

Strengths
  • Twitchy and explosive
  • Ill-tempered striking on display against Ohio State
  • Lateral slide quickness to close running lanes from backside
  • Rush zombie with good secondary rush motor
  • Quick hands to punch and play around blocks
  • Speed and athleticism to cover RBs and match up with TEs in space
  • Smooth drops and fluid hips amplify zone cover radius
  • Good tackle range with speed to go get them
  • Flexible and strong to maintain balance through contact
  • Proper sink and extension to set a solid edge
  • Agility and suddenness to expand his reach as open-field tackler
  • Dangerous burst and bend whips tardy tackles around the edge
  • Quick trigger to create disruption in backfield
  • Good rip-and-run to flatten and attack the pocket
Weaknesses
  • Lacks desired size of a full-time, NFL edge rusher
  • Long-arm tackles pester him at point of attack
  • Needs to harness energy as open-field tackler
  • Occasionally telegraphs rush plan with pre-snap setup of feet
  • Antsy demeanor causes delays coming off the ball at times
  • Rush momentum can carry him beyond the arc
  • Mechanical in his rush counters
  • Currently wins with athletic ability over skill level as pass rusher
  • Some panic when face-guarding down the field

If Baun is there at 43 I would gladly take him.

If we end up with another T J Watt kinda guy with him we would score big time.  I was hoping for JJ when he was a rookie but we never even got a shot at him.   Then along comes T J and again he doesn't fall far enough.  Imagine our drafting Watt in the 2nd in 2017 instead of Shaheen.

If Pace is content to hold onto Floyd for now then IMHO Baun is that type of explosive OLB you could use almost strictly as a pass rush specialist in 2020 and if he proves as good overall as Floyd has been but a much better pass rusher we have our replacement for Floyd in 2021 already on the roster for far less $$$ then Floyd will be looking for.

Maybe we can get lucky this time and his smaller size will cause him to drift down towards #43.  If we're gonna go BPA there at a position of need, and provided we've filled some gaps in the offense in FA, I'd have to think Baun would at least be a fit.

I doubt he has the length that Pace is looking for.

Sometimes ya' gotta look past the pure physical metric and look at production.  Floyd ticked all of physical check marks as far as length but was never a top pass rusher in college and hasn't been as a pro either.  And I thought "length" was more Fangio thing anyway.

As I've posted before most pro scouts and personnel guys agree that college production as an edge rusher trumps physical make up and in that respect Baun has shown he's the real thing while going up against some of the better OLs in the country.

What's to like is also the fact that he's not only a pure edge rusher but also a kid with similar versatility to Floyd.  But before we make a draft day decision some kind of decision will have to made about Floyd so I guess we'll just wait that one out.

I agree. Not sure Pace does.
