Rams new DC: B Staley, Broncos OLB

Very, um, interesting hire. What has this guy accomplished as OLB's coach for the Broncos to deserve this? Not to talk down a guy, but anyone can coach Bradley Chubb and Von Miller. It's not like he's out here developing other OLB's. Shaq Barrett came from Denver where he did nothing. Shane Ray flaked out entirely.

He's a Fangio guy. Coached OLBs with Chicago in 2017 and 2018. Moved to the Broncos with Vic. Before that, he was DC at some smaller colleges.

That’s not entirely true, actually not very true at all. Granted Chubb and Miller are great talents but there have been busts drafted just as high. The part where you’re wrong is Shaq Barrett doing nothing, he was very good as a back up at Denver and the little time he got he was usually effective and made plays. Sure Ray was a bust but it’s not like he was poorly coached, he hasn’t done anything anywhere he’s been.

Exactly.

Not like all these years they did nothing for him, went to TB and the light just came on.

He was a talent in Denver.

If he spent time in Chicago as well as their OLB might be worth looking at those players as well. Not sure what his coaching title was there however. Definitely an outside the box hire.

Shaq Barrett was also well-coached at Colorado State, where Joey Porter was his LB/pass-rush coach, IIRC.

Barrett's issue in Denver was largely that he was blocked on the roster - by Demarcus Ware first, then trying to accommodate Shane Ray to get as much out of the 1st round pick sunk into him.

Like @jrry32 said, I had a feeling that McVay's approach to the hire was going to be someone off the staff of one of the coordinators who had stymied him in the past.  Those would have been Zimmer - if you go back to his first season as Rams' HC, Fangio, Belichick (where most of that garden has been picked already), and possibly Saleh (I though that Joe Woods - who could also trace his lines back to Wade in Denver - could have drawn some consideration, but he also could have been, by-rights, blocked by the Niners).

Eh, I'm not sure Saleh really counts. Yeah, he got the better of us in that one game where the OL was atrocious, but we've scored with relative ease in the other games against him.

Disappointed to not keep the entire defensive staff together, oh well.

I'm a little surprised nobody has tried to hire Ed Donatell.

Probably because what we've seen of Donatell's system when he's been a DC in the past is almost diametrically different from Fangio's in a number of ways.  Not sure people want to necessary bite so quickly on believe that a couple years under Fangio - where he coached some talented individuals - are enough to overwrite what we saw from him in his time in Washington, Green Bay, and Atlanta previously.

Sounds like the options were plentiful

I was referring to the coordinators who slowed them down before the near-wholesale OL turnover from last year.  Both the Vikings and Bears, in consecutive years, went up against an absolutely marauding offense and snacked them right in the face, dropping them on their butts like next-to-no other team had or did since, until the Rams ran into Belichick in the Super Bowl (and we've yet to see a Belichick defensive assistant truly successfully transition into a successful DC role; there may be arguments to make, in time, for Flores and Patricia as HC's, but that's a horse of a different color).
