They got lucky with Matthews and he really only had 2-3 decent years before being completely soft and overrated. So you are asking the Packers to do something they simply aren’t designed to do. When you play in an even front, your LBs are usually on the lighter side. You're playing them side-to-side. Your ILBs have to be bigger in order to hold up against the run, because you don't have the big guys ahead of them. And the bigger your LBs are, usually the worst they are in coverage. Same story under Capers. I remember the 49ers under Harbaugh calling our defense “soft” and not “physical”. Plus Pack don’t have the cap space to go sign any decent FA spending spree at LB.
