Dome
I assumed he would just stop playing when he died.

RuskieTitan
Surprised he walked away on his own terms. Sort of expected him to linger around unwanted and unsigned. Good for him. He was an excellent tight end and was one of the faces of the Chargers. Not having a ring could hurt his Hall of Fame chances, but he should still be able to get in eventually. Interesting fact: Gates played basketball in college and never played college football!

Wow, I've never heard that before. Any chance he's actually retiring from football to return to basketball?

He would get in very easily if I were a voter. He was definitely a HOF caliber player with the career numbers to back it up.
Chargers
Class act and such great player. Can't wait to see his HOF speech in a few years.
VigilantZombie
1st Ballot HOFer imo. Great person, great player. Awesome career.
43M
There is absolutely ZERO question that the guy is a HOF. With his resume, his teams couldve never once made the playoffs, and he would still get in? Rings only matter for HOF IMO if said players individual accomplishments are questionably HoF worthy. Gates doesnt have that issue. Top 5 TE all time.
VigilantZombie
I agree @FourThreeMafia and the thing is, to me, he was the best TE, ever and he didnt even play college football. How crazy is that?
Malik
The era of the San Diego Chargers is about to be over really fast. How many players left on the roster were there when they were in SD? Edited January 15, 2020 by Malik
