TecmoSuperJoe
There isn't a clear cut best. Just like there isn't someone with the clear cut best hands ever. Just a ton of guys at the top bracket. Bruce, Rice, Moss, Owens, Alworth, Jimmy Smith, Irvin, and a ton of others. Just the usual top names people hear in terms of just being one of the better receivers in the league. Moss ran two deep routes better than any human alive but his short/medium route running is on par with most Top WRs. It’s nothing goat status or even close to it. 1. Rice, by far. 2. Antonio Brown 3. Chad Johnson 4. Michael Irvin 5. Marvin Harrison HM: Cris Carter Edited January 18, 2020 by BayRaider
Hukos
He's still active, so I don't know if that counts for this discussion, but I don't think I've ever seen Julio Jones not run a perfect, crisp route.

Rice, Largent, Harrison, Irvin, Fitzgerald are all up there.

I think people just see NFL Films highlights of Moss burning some defensive back for a long touchdown and misremember that as the only thing he did well, when in reality it was one of a few things. Moss wasn't a one trick pony with speed like Ashley Lelie. Moss got open on a variety of routes consistently. If folks go back and watch the actual full broadcast Vikings games (there are some on YouTube), they'd see this. spilltray
There is more to it than we can actually judge. Clean breaks are nice, obvious set up moves are cool, but we don't know the actual design. A level of timing and precision go in that are impossible to judge completely watching the results. From what I can see, Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison are probably the two best technicians I've gotten a chance to watch. Larry Fitzgerald, Issac Bruce, and Chris Carter are good HMs.
bzane
Hi! Can I offer a couple of old-time guys who had reputations as impeccable route-runners? RamblinMan99
Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, Antonio Brown, etc. Basically a lot of those short slot receivers who didn't have the natural athleticism to grab the football out of the air without running a perfect route. Marvin Harrison was great at route running too. Harrison was more of a complete package wideout. Had both the natural tangibles and could follow a route to get open for Manning. Ty21
Players I’ve watched in my lifetime, Chad Johnson was my favorite probably. Antonio Brown was great too. My two favorite recent route runners coming out of college we’re Cooper Kupp and Tyler Lockett
Hunter2_1
He's not the best or probably in the discussion, but TY Hilton runs some damned routes.
