Keep in mind - Floyd has a lot of coverage responsibilities. If you replace him with a Dante Fowler type you’re changing the roles of a lot of players in the Bears defense.

Everyone excited to see Mack dropping in coverage more often and Roquan blitzing less?

The whole idea behind adding a true rusher opposite Mack is to maximize what he does best which is not him dropping in coverage. I think his role would see the least change. My personal preference would be to have a true edge rusher opposite Mack. Most of Roquan’s or Kwit’s pressure on the blitz in my recollection has been as a 5th or 6th rusher meaning he’s rushing in conjunction with our edges and not instead of them. Also, the replacement player for Floyd would also be in coverage at times too. I don’t think the change would be as significant as you think. We are in nickel most often anyway with a good portion of that being 2-4-5 where both edge guys are rushing in a 4-man rush.

Ultimately we need to do what is necessary to get more non-Mack pressure. It was a huge shortfall this year with Floyd being the primary culprit. I don’t care who gets to the QB only that they collectively do so more often.

Does anyone have Floyd’s snap counts in coverage vs rushing the passer? This outlines completion percentage against him in coverage (10 attempts against each of the past 2 years) but obviously only counts targeted plays. Even if he’s targeted only 10% of the snaps he spends in coverage over the season you’re talking about just about 6 snaps per game. Noteworthy, but not a HUGE deal IMO.

No but I'm equally curious to see how many QB pressures Floyd got last year...anyone?

So for 2019 they have him having blitzed 51 times, getting 26 pressures, 15 hurries, and 8 knockdowns, while only finishing with 3 sacks. He was also targeted 17 times for 14 completions. That sounds bad but he only allowed an average of 5.4 yards per completion and no TDs. His responsibility looks like it is much in the Briggs-role (mostly flats or shallow crosses to him from the opposite side of the field), where the average depth of the targets he covered was only 1.9 yards per attempt.

As far as snaps specifically vs the run, coverage, passrushing etc I don't know of a breakdown yet.

This assumes a paradigm shift in how the defense is played.

You need to drop guys in coverage. If you typically drop your EDGE but you add a guy who can’t cover, you have to start playing different personnel or dropping other players. The reality of any 34 group is that 1 of the EDGE guys plays more of a utility role where rushing the passer is one of many responsibilities. Floyd is good at playing that role. A guy like Ogbah or Fowler would not be.

They generally go back and forth. But...the OLB who does drop into coverage is also expected to be able to rush the passer. Floyd can't, basically.

I do not like the 3-4 defense. I think we're all understanding why I hold that position now...

Earlier this year (and even in this thread) I was going to take the time to post advanced statistics and compare them to the FA field that may surprise alot of people, but to be honest it's not worth it at this point because most seem to already have their minds made up.

FYI, suga. A blitz is considered more than 4 rushers and sport radar's blitz numbers are only counting how often Floyd was one of those 5 or more players rushing the QB at the time.

Here, I'll do this much because it's only copy/paste.

These are the totals pressures in 2019 for each defender per SIS. (I only posted those who registered at least 5.

These numbers are using the following criteria; A pressure is considered by any of the following:

  • a) any pass or scramble charted with pressure by a specific defender, or "overall pressure",
  • b) any sack charted as "rusher untouched," "blown block," or "overall pressure",
  • c) any sack charted as "coverage sack" or "failed scramble," but only if these sacks are also charted with a specific defender giving pass pressure. (For example, a "coverage sack" can also have pressure if a specific defender forces the quarterback out of the pocket immediately, but the sack takes a lot longer because of the coverage.)

So Floyd gets close to the QB but... doesn’t make many impact plays in doing so? Great. 12.5 sacks in his last 43 games? Cool. 1 FF in 55 games as an edge rusher? Awesome. 10 PD in 4 seasons as a guy who “excels in coverage”? We’re so lucky.

This is Adrian Amos all over again. Solid but unspectacular player we’d be better off watching play elsewhere. The only difference is that we were smart enough not to overpay Amos.

So pressure doesn't constitute having an impact and only sacks do? Cmon AZ, you're better than this.

See. I don't understand arguments like this at all.

All year, I have heard complaints about Mack, Prince, Smith, EJ, RRh, Fuller, and Floyd. Damn near our entire defense. That's over half of the defensive starters and judging by these opinions, we should have been an average at best defense.

But yet we still had the 8th best defense in the league and 8th best pass defense in the league!

So someone (or some players) on this team is being vastly underrated.  Either that or Pagano is the best DC in the league and deserves a raise, ASAP.

@JustAnotherFan

I see what you're getting at, he definitely has more pressures than I expected. But looking at each stat I would award more points for sacks, FFs, QB knockdowns, TFL, passes defensed, and a number of other statistics over QB pressure. Most of them have a definitive impact on a play, but pressured throws might just mean they took a smaller dump off or even just completed the original pass in the face of pressure. That's why QB pressures are absolutely a facet to look at and acknowledge but to me are a more nominal statistic to show a player's impact. It always seemed like the EDGE's version of tackles. I remember Kirk Morrison always compiling a ton of tackles in OAK but it seemed like most were drag downs over 4 yards from the LOS, so it was a really inflated stat. He wasn't out there stonewalling guys at the LOS like Willis, Fletcher, etc were.

As far as the criticisms of the other players I agree. Mack didn't make as many impact plays as I expected but he completely altered the gameplan for opposing offenses. I've went play by play to show how they either doubled/chipped him, did a quick dump off that nobody could get a sack from, ran motions toward him (he plays the run as well as any EDGE in the game), etc. Those are things that don't show up on the stat sheet.

Fuller played well overall, I was pretty happy with him. Drove me nuts how much cushion he would give on 3rd and 3 but IDK the playcall either. Pagano could easily have had an OLB cover a shallow zone in hopes of cutting off the quick slant or short curl and THEY busted their coverage to allow that easy first down. For the most part he seemed to do well, just missed some INTs you'd expect of him.

Amukamara is a victim of his play style. He will hammer WRs to make it almost impossible to throw them the ball on a number of plays, but that means there is a higher chance of getting burned. Sometimes his grabs prevented easy TDs. Have to take the good with the bad. I'm more concerned about his health as he is getting older and has never been too durable. He might physically decline soon, so we need someone ready to take over.

EJax had to play closer to the box and didn't get to read the QB as much. That is just not his strong suit. There were several times he looked like he got burned deep, maybe he was covering someone else and it just looked like it was his fault due to a busted coverage but it looked like he was getting burned. Hell Ed Reed got burned at times too though, I just hope he gets to stay back and read the QB more if we get healthy in the front 7.

Smith sucked when he first got back but really rebounded. IDK what was going on with him but the last few weeks before his injury he looked 100% back to form and looked like he was going to be a dominating player to me. Hopefully he heals and comes back strong.

RRH wasn't garbage by any means but for a passrush specialist, he seemed to be really ineffective far too often. I was just disappointed in him overall, and feel like Williams completely outshined him. Would he have been better if he had Hicks healthy and next to him? I'd bet so, but he still didn't look like more than just an athletic depth guy this year to me.
