NFL to try new onside kick rule for pro bowl

If you think people are complaining about refs now, just wait until a 50/50 call involving DPI or Illegal Contact comes up on not-onside kick play (what's the official name for this play?). People are going to go nuclear on the refs.

My ONLY major tweak - can't gain more than 15 yards if you convert the play.   There's no onside kick where you can actually get past the other team's 40-45 yard line, that should be the same here - no bombs, no DPI, no iffy penalty creating a huge gain for the O.  Otherwise, if the odds of a 4th and 15 are about the same as the odds of the old onside kick, I'm all for it.

That's also why you can't let the O get more than 15 yards.   On an onside kick, no way you get more than regaining possession on the 40 or so.

so, the defenders are free to commit any penalties?

Well, it gives the O the ball at their 40.  It's a huge penalty either way.   There's not a single defender who wouldn't get skewered for giving up a penalty that allowed the trailing team to get possession.    The reward for converting should match the intended goal - to give trailing teams a chance that was similar to before the player safety rules changed the odds of an onsides kick and the impact it had on win probability.  It should not swing the odds so far the other way.

Here's the thing though - the best result the O could get from the old onsides was getting the ball back at their own 40 (give or take a few yards).    If the goal is to give teams that chance - it shouldn't swing too far the other way.  The old onsides kick never had a chance to get a chunk play, let alone score.   Getting the ball back at your own 40 is a major swing regardless, no need to go the other way and let the trailing team get a free chunk play attempt where they had no such hope with the old onsides.

This is dumb to many factors involved to lose a game when a head. This benefits the team that is losing more so then the team that is winning. its a 50 50 shot when an onside kick is being done. With a 4th and 15 even though it is 15 yards it still has better odds for the losing teams as penalties can be in play, one holding, PI, roughing passer, face mask, etc. can give them the opportunity to get back in the game.
