Is Jimmy Garoppolo underrated?

I think you've got two things working against him in people's minds...

1 is the way he started his career (7-0 with wild numbers) and the Brady / Pats connection led to a lot of hype that he was the next Aaron Rodgers or whatever, which is an unfair standard for any player.

And 2 people dont seem to realize that sometimes if you are winning there are some members of the team who arent asked to do as much as they can, because there are just other ways to get it done.  If he were losing games I'd say clearly he doesnt have another gear to step up into or whatever, but hard to evaluate is a QB either way when his running back has 200 yards and 4 touchdowns in a win.

Tbh I think he's probably long term a top-10 or 12 QB in the league, but haven't seen any evidence he's a Brady / Rodgers / Brees / Mahomes / Watson level guy.  Could he be though?  Sure

Cowherd called him a game manager.

I mean, he kind of is in a way, at least this year. We haven’t seen him with the ball in his hands a ton for a while now, so we don’t really know what he’s capable of. A game manager to me is incapable of transcending the talent around him. I’m not sure at this point if that’s Jimmy or not.

I think the list of game managers is longer than most fans are willing to admit. I also don’t think there’s a horribly negative connotation that comes with that label.

Let me pose this question to the thread, what do you define as a game manager?

It shouldn't be such a derogatory term and also not sure it applies here

Realistically the discipline to hand the ball off and throw to the check down guy or throw the ball away when it makes sense is a very important skill and something a lot of QBs cant do, which is why the Alex Smith's of the world have long careers and win a lot of games

Ultimately every QB will eventually be in a situation where he's asked to carry his team and how you perform in those situations separates the greatest QBs of all-time from guys who are "just" game managers

Jimmy will have his opportunities, maybe as soon as SB54 if the Chiefs start putting up a bunch of scores early

Jimmy G is the perfect example of the perception of a QB. On one hand, someone will see him throw the ball 8 times and say the Niners are trying to hide him. On the other hand, why through the ball when the running game is clearly dominating the game? Plus when I think of Jimmy G the first thing that comes to out of my mouth is, he will give you 1 or 2 opportunities for a turnover the defense need to make him pay. Is that to say he is bad? Nope. Heck we just saw Joe Burrow have arguably the greatest college football season from a QB but yet if you watch every LSU game, he will have 1 or 2 plays where the defense shouldve intercepted a pass or he got out of like 2 or 3 potential sacks where the defense had him dead to rights. So nobody is perfect. What I see from Jimmy G is a guy who just wins. The only true knock I have on him is his health. Take away this season he has mainly been hurt all the time. Now maybe this season Jimmy G has turned the corner like Stafford did when he was hurt often early in his career but then went a very long time without missing any games. Or this season could be the perfect storm for the Niners where everything lined up right for them and thats why they made this Superbowl run. Sometimes you have to have some luck in order to get to the Superbowl.

To answer the question, I dont think Jimmy G is underrated and the reason why is because the Niners are getting exactly what they paid for. They paid him a big salary because they want wins and to get where they are right now and thats the Superbowl. Fans and even the media get caught up in stats. How many passing yards, touchdowns, QBR, QB Rating. At the end of the day its all about wins and losses. Jimmy G has the wins the success that follows with him being the Niners QB. The Niners can have Mullens and he could look good with the Niners but how many wins the Niners are getting with Mullens? Did the Niners make the playoffs with Mullens? What have the Niners done since the Smith/Kaepernick and Harbaugh era? Like Jimmy G/Shanny has proven to be successful so to me that says Jimmy G isnt underrated. He is exactly what he is and thats a successful QB. People make him underrated because they find alot of things to criticize him for. When I think of underrated I think of Teddy Bridgewater but certainly Jimmy G doesnt come to mind.

Two bad games (ATL and SEA), the rest they won. and in 3 of those games Jimmy G had 4 TD passes.

So I'm not really seeing the idea where he can't sling the rock. Is he a game manager? Sure, in the sense that he doesn't need to throw to win games. Can he sling it if he needs to? Yes, absolutely, and the stats and results back that up 100%.

He got to the SB throwing for 77 yards.... Lets not put all the credit on him for the turnaround. I think its more due to the coaching ability of Shanahan and the overall level of talent on the team. Jimmy did enough to win games. Their run game and defense got them to the SB.

Maybe. At least heading into this SB where he is A) coming off a game where he didn't have to do anything and B) the opposing QB is Mahomes.

He's played a game manager role for much of 2019, and so far in the postseason, but he's not a "game manager" in the derogatory sense that he limits what the offense can do and can't be asked to do much. He's franchise QB territory to me, which makes him a top 18 or so QB. It's hard to rate him much higher when we've only seen 1 season of more than 5 starts from him, a season where he had a great run game and one of the best offensive staffs supporting him, and only put up good not great numbers. However, I do feel comfortable calling him "the guy" for San Fran for the foreseeable future.

This is fair, but look at his numbers after we traded for Emmanuel Sanders, they were elite. Before that we had kittle and no one else. Deebo wasn't the player he is now before that trade. The game has slowed down for him. Before that there were more rookie mistakes and dropped passes. Sanders helped solidify the weapons we have and the offense opened up

Garoppolo took steps forward this year. There were definitely times where he looked he could be a top 5 QB someday, then there were other times he made you go wtf?? ... In the same game lol so it's somewhat of a mixed bag at times, but he always seemed to make plays on third down with the game on the line. He's f*cking money on third down and in the fourth quarter this year

His best attribute is how he preforms in crucial moments when the pressure mounts. I'll take a clutch qb any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The guy rises to the moment

I'd love Jimmy more if he was a simple game manager like Wilson was with the LOB. I don't think he's underrated probably around the top 15 guys in the league. But he needs to not average a turnover a game (And I don't care what his numbers are when he throws 1 interception, in the playoffs it's bye bye).

For now he's Alex Smith, and kinda Goff from last year...Next year he probably will look better though.

Him forcing as many passes as he does and him taking as many risks as he does disqualifies him from being Alex Smith lol.

He's Kirk Cousins without the choking.

Liked, just for the choking jab.. but in truth, they have different makeups. Jimmy is pretty loose and unflappable. Kirk is tied up inside so tightly that he implodes in most big moments.

The first Seattle game would be the counter to this. That was one of the worst QB clutch performances we've seen this year.
