What's an NFL season that was just weird/unusual

For me it's 2010.

  • 7-9 team wins division and a playoff game.
  • NFC had maybe the worst 1-2 seeds in history and the best teams in the conference were the two wild card teams.
  • Chargers were the first ranked offense and defense and missed the playoffs.
  • 6-seed makes a fairly smooth and dominant SB run that in hindsight shouldn't have been that surprising given who they played.
  • Patriots had one of their best regular seasons ever and feel flat on their face in the divisional round.

2008 year was weird.

-Brady getting hurt, leading to the Patriots missing the playoffs.

-Titans with Kerry Collins at QB starting 10-0 and finishing 13-3

-Favre playing with the Jets

-Dolphins winning the AFC East after going 1-15 the previous year.

-Cardinals going to the Super Bowl.

-Two rookie QBs starting the whole season and leading their teams to the playoffs in Ryan and Flacco(which was unheard of then).

-The Lions going 0-16

That's some of the things from that season. Just a weird season all around.

This. The NFC Championship game had two 9-win teams, the defending champion Giants going one-and-done despite an awesome season (partly because of Plaxico shooting himself in the leg towards the end of the year), and Roethlisberger having a really rough regular season prior to his great Superbowl performance. Brady missing the season was also huge. If he never gets hurt, there's no way the Pat's weren't making it back to the AFCCG at the very least with that roster and cupcake schedule.

Atlanta in 2010 was a 13 win team that got Baltimore 2019 style stomped in their first playoff game.

  • The WC Packers did wind up the best team.
  • The WC Saints were hot garbage that got ran over by a 7-9 team.
    • They were the 12th best playoff team by a long margin

1991 Was pretty weird

  • The Ultimate Weapon went down in week 1 and the Philly defense was top 5 all time
    • The defense that played them most weeks looked top 5 all  time against that offense.
  • Barry Sanders made it to the NFCCG
    • The week before in the Divisional Round the Lions beat a Dallas team that benched a healthy Aikman to start the game.
  • SF went 10-6, killed Chicago to ruin their chance at the North title on the season ending MNF. but still missed the playoffs.
    • That was the only time they missed the playoffs between 1983 and 1998
  • Todd Marinovich started a playoff game
  • The Super Bowl featured a HoF and league MVP RB unable to find his helmet.

I always thought 2017 was weird:

The Jaguars, Titans, and Bills all made the playoffs for the first time in a decade, and the Titans beat the Chiefs in the WC round after Mariota caught his own TD pass.

Nick Foles led the Eagles to a SB win over the Patriots.

Deshaun Watson took the league by storm before suffering a season ending injury in practice.

Case Keenum led the Vikings to the NFCCG with the Minnesota Miracle.

Sean McVay and the Rams led the league in offensive scoring after being dead last the previous season.

The whole anthem protest controversy.

2000, aka the QB recession

Young, Aikman, Marino and Elway were all gone.

Brett Favre was regressing since his three year MVP streak.

Peyton was only in his 3rd season and Tom Brady was just a random 6th round rookie.

The Super Bowl was Kerry Collins vs. Trent Diofer

As an Eagles fan who lives near Houston it was very strange.

The leader (or co-leader) for MVP was injured in week 14. The media went on Bash Foles Fest 2017 and then Foles was incredible.

The 6th seed bye talk and the underdog masks and Kelce wearing a mummers outfit at the parade and having a rant for the ages was all good stuff.

The Astros won the World Series(*)so Houston went crazy with joy and within 24 hours Deshaun Watson tore his ACL in practice.

The Jags story was just nuts.

  • They appeared to have an incredible defense (based a lot on 5 games vs terrible teams - Houston, Indy, Cleveland)
    • The D was still very good, just not as good as those 5 games made them look
  • They went bonkers vs Pittsburgh twice! (30-9 regular season and a 45-42 classic in the playoffs)
  • They had the lead at halftime of the AFCCG but ran scared into the locker room
    • They had a play which may have won them the game but the ref blew the whistle because of a bad angle (he should have let the play happen like they try to do now)
    • Brady went Brady and Gilmore made an incredible play on 4th down to ice the game

Keenum's year long magic was fun to watch and the Minneapolis Miracle was just bonkers.

The Bills in the locker room watching the Bengals put them in the playoffs was a nice moment.

Imagine if we had a QB matchup in the SB like that today. The NFL/TV networked would hate it.

Imagine if we had like Ryan Tannehill vs Kirk Cousins as our SB QB matchup.

might be my Patriots fan bias but 2008 was extremely odd
-Matt Cassel
-Brett Favre playing (poorly) for the Jets (and sending his dong to Jenn Sterger)

-Giants 1-and-done in the playoffs despite having an objectively better team than the one that won the Super Bowl the previous year

-Panthers somehow going 12-4 with Jake Delhomme in his last decent year before the wheels came off

-Dolphins riding the Wildcat and a rejuvenated Chad Pennington to a division title

-Michael Turner (remember him?) was the league's leading rusher.

-Matt Ryan with the best (statistical) rookie season since Marino

-Vikings won their division with Gus Frerotte at QB

-Titans won their division with Kerry Collins at QB

-Cardinals sleepwalking into the playoffs with a +1 point differential, losing 4 of their last 6 (including a 47-7 curbstomp by the Matt Cassel Patriots), then Larry Fitzgerald going HAM in the playoffs and taking them all the way to the Super Bowl, which was one of the best ever.
