I don't think they could have gotten a better OC at this stage in the game and, honestly, didn't see this coming at all! Nice! Where else was Gruden going to go and be able to call plays, curious? He obviously wanted to be a OC, employed, in the mix since being a HC whether he sat a year or not wasn't happening in 2021. Makes perfect sense to me really. Doesn't make it any less of a great hire even so. I'm sure Marrone potentially being on a hot seat this year was enticing as well as if the teams record isn't ideal and he gets let go midseason he'd get the interim tag with a shot at the HC spot. RaidersAreOne
I like this signing. Was hoping we would make room for him somehow but our staff was evidently full. Good luck in Jax!

Both guys want to be THE dude on O and of course with Jon there, that would never happen.

HTTRDynasty
One thing about Gruden that may not be that well-known is that he's a pretty good talent evaluator as a coach. McCloughan called him the best talent evaluating HC he's ever worked with, which is high praise considering he's worked with the Pete Carrol and Mike Holmgren. Apparently, Gruden stood on the table for Matt Ioannidis and Jamison Crowder, who have both more than exceeded expectations from their draft spot. If they're smart, the Jags would take advantage of that.

So I'd expect him to have a voice. Edited January 22, 2020 by .Buzz

Jags team has some pieces but it isn’t anywhere close to that AFC team a few years back. Just asking for Les Snead who’s supremely happy with Jalen. Tom had his hands in every single thing going on with football operations. Hired coaches on Marrones staff, forced Foles (which in turn is why Flip was hired), didn't include coaches in draft selections, etc. Think everyone wanted something different just so we could have something new, but hard to do your job as a head coach when you're in the spot he was in. I'm happy you're thrilled with Jalen, but we're pretty damn happy having 2 extra 1st round picks and another 4 next year to help rebuild this thing. A rebuild would've needed to happen regardless if Jalen was here or not with the development of a young QB and a lot of the 2017 team coming from FA/aging vets. So having high picks that can be key contributors/building blocks on cheap contracts is much more preferred.
