23 for him is 1) showing the players they will pay for their own and hes also a leader in the lockroom. he was very professional in how he handled this unfortunate situation this year regarding his extension.  2) we need Ngakoue to keep our good EDGE rushing so we dont have another HOLE to fill when both caldwell and Marrone are likely doing it for their job this year.  i do think allen is the better all-around between both of our true edge rushers but Ngakoue has the better playmaking ability with his strip sack art.

And how many wins has that gotten you in the last 2 years? Is that Yann's fault no but why keep pouring money into the situation? It’s the reason the Raiders parted with Mack.. you can’t keep pouring money into players and they aren’t players to change the course of your record. If you're going to be bad might as well be bad while preserving the cap.

dont forget Marrone and Caldwell are going to be coaching/gming for their jobs if i recall correctly meaning they 1) have no option but to suceeed and 2) win AT ALL COST meaning dont let your good players walk and make another hole.

Everybody is under this assumption I’m not convinced that is the case. The Jags would basically have to arise from the depths of hell just to make it out of the AFC south. I’d rather take the Browns roster if I had a make or break season.. and even that is a hard ask to get that squad to the playoffs so to take the Jags with every if under the sun in order to do it... is illogical.. The last 2 offseason fans have been saying we are only a season from our last playoff birth now it’s 2 seasons.. How far is the squad away from 17’ compared to offseason 18’? Jags are not getting closer they are getting further away from that 17’ squad. So if Marrone continued on under the pretense this is make or break he should pack his stuff up now and have the movers on standby.

The way Marrone talked about the hiring of Gruden and needing to get someone that he can depend on immediately with no learning curve as a playcaller signals something though.

Truthfully we don't really know what he needs to achieve. As you said, it's obvious this squad needs a lot of things to go right with current guys on the roster, fill a whole or two via FA, and get 2-3 guys in the draft that come in and make some level of impact I'd say to make it out of the South. But is that what he needs to do?

Does he need to continue developing Minshew/have a good year from him and go 8-8 or better? I highly doubt a 6-10 team or worse, given Marrones tone since he kept his job, will do it going into next off-season.

7-9 is kind of murky water that I don't want to touch. If Minshew looks like a long term fixture I could see Khan having reservations about blowing it up. But that's just my opinion.

There are tell signs example 18’ a lot of people were on this message board clamoring saying Doug was going to be fired after that game or after that season. That was when Henry embarrassed the Jags yet again on prime time. I said that night it was clear Doug had already been told he’d be back next year. How could you tell Bryan starting over Jackson was the clear give away amongst other rotational players getting starts over healthy guys. They were clearly looking at roster depth for next season. Teams that need to win play their best players. They’ll weasel out a 7-9 8-8 season and tell you their inexperienced and they are right there give them a chance for the break through in 2021. I smell it😭

This roster as currently constructed shouldn't sniff 8-8. So if they do, props to Doug.

Change is full of hope and excitement and I get it, but I do want to see Doug operate without having things forced on him/in an impossible situation. Not ideal to be in a year where you need to show improvement when the roster is in tough shape though.

As I said from mid/late season and on, I wanted a change, but now that Doug is here going into next year I'm not going to hope he fails/things don't go well.

This is exactly why I said this franchise is destined to repeat stupidity year after year. We all know this key fact right here as stated.. so for Doug to put his name on something believing in his heart of hearts he could get this roster to the playoffs. Doug can’t account for draft picks or free agents because if both options bomb out you have to say to yourself I’m able to win with what I got. Doug said hisself less than a month ago in a presser, 20’ wont be predicated on wins and loses... 🤨 That didn’t sound like a man who knows it’s playoff or bust to me.

That sounded like a man just walked in to a casino with $100 dollars to burn in his pocket.. and when he hit the door the casino gave him an additional $40 in house money. But where some organizations like the Titans when Malarkey won a playoff game and they still ax’d him because they knew this ain’t it chief. The Jags lack that intestinal fortitude to know like hey the rest of the league is moving at a rapid pace yet we’re stuck on a treadmill. Just look at the contrast I want you to think about 2017. Do you remember the 49ers vs Jags game I want you to just think about those 2 rosters look at where the 9ers were.. and where they are now. Now do the same with Jags.

That’s why this organization continues to bang their head on the same brick wall year after year. That’s why I say it’s not adding up to this is a playoff or fired type year for Doug. I’m interested in seeing how many people buy season tickets this year that is going to be interesting factor for 20’ thats the only reason I can see them going outside of the norm and trying to get a playmaker at 9 to pair with Minshew and Chark. Outside of that it’s going to be a hard sell for this organization.

You're comparing vastly different situations with Tennessee man. Marrone has been given an absolute **** job for the past couple years. Personally, based on everything reported with Coughlin, I don't see how it even gave him a chance to succeed. You know all the problems, I've listed them a ton and I'm not going to go through that again. We have no idea what Doug can and can't do or where he can lead us. He got us into the playoffs for the first time and to the doorstep of the Super Bowl if not for a phantom whistle on Myles Jack. The season itself was whatever considering the schedule but he got us into the playoffs with Bortles and we went into Pittsburgh and knocked off Big Ben and co. and nearly did the same to Brady in Foxborough. As far as Mularkey, his ceiling clearly wasn't close to that. He got that org. turned around and on a solid path and that was pretty much the best he could do.

Do I think it's likely Doug is the long term guy? No. Too much has happened and the roster isn't set up for a quick turnaround. With where the roster is constructed due to what Coughlin (and maybe others?) did to Ramsey, ARob, Ngakoue, etc. None of the big hits we've had in the past few years have been locked down, so now we're in position to have to continue to makeshift this roster.

As far as Doug and roster building, he can indeed account for draft picks, FA signings, etc. starting now. In the presser it was stated the coaches will work in unison with the FO and both Doug and Dave will report directly to Khan. That doesn't happen unless there's a power structure in which both get plenty of say. Probably too little, too late but it's good to see they're running like most organizations now.

We’ve been discussing this forever but this is a post that you liked. 🤔 So did you just read the first sentence? Or do you also agree with the second sentence? I’m confused. The game has moved along well since 17’. Let 17’ go imagine as if it was a decade ago why? Because in NFL time do you remember the Giants 16’ playoff run? 18’ Bears? You won’t in 4 years.. and here shortly we’ll all be remembered together as 1 hit wonders. The team still lines up and plays ball like it’s early 00s. No schemes, same game plan every week,  You can make all the excuses you want for Doug but what exactly has Doug done right outside of as they say keeping it all from falling apart. Even that statement sounds ridiculous as hell. But besides that what has Doug shown you coaching wise outside of 17’ that he is a pillar of this organization? You have to have some positive attributes.. so let’s hear them?...

I'm not holding onto 2017 as a reason that he's the answer. I'm saying that he showed, as a HC, he could head a team into the playoffs and have success in the playoffs/have the team prepared to go into hostile environments like PIT and NE. Not all coaches can do that.

I liked that post because I agree.

I can agree that Doug had a ****show of a situation here that was largely out of his control while also having wanted to move on prior to sticking with the regime. I don't think this situation, at least to me, is as black and white as you make it.
