Raiders extend RB Jalen Richard

Bringing back Richard was a smart move, especially for that small price tag, relatively speaking. He has two years in Grudens system, he's a proven pass catcher, he's a proven pass protector, he offers insurance in kick returning, and he's generally been healthy.

He's a very high end #3 RB IMO. Not overly valuable because he isn't much of a threat when running the ball, but he does it well enough and shines in both areas of the passing game. He definitely has enough value to the team overall for that contract, and he's still young. Look to draft a guy in the 3rd or 4th round or bring in a more proven vet to back up Jacobs and let Richard be the pass catcher, special teams guy that gets the occasional carry. I preferred the idea of bringing Richard back over Washington because only one of them should make the team next season. I think the gap in Richards ability in the passing game over Washington is bigger than the gap in Washingtons ability to run the football over Richard. And it's a passing league, Jacobs is a better runner than pass catcher at this stage (though he was certainly underutilized and has the ability to be better) so it makes more sense to bring back the guy who's best in that area than our stud second year man whos less proficient in his area of strength. Since neither guy is/should be the primary backup to Jacobs.

Good signing and well deserved for not giving up in 2018. He was giving his all while many others packed it in.

Good pass catcher who has hot/cold games/seasons. His rookie year he showed great explosiveness in the passing and running game. Then a season of fumbles in 2nd or 3rd season and many gave up on him thinking he'd be cut. He's not CG as CG could truck for a little RB. Richard has more big play explosiveness to Washington's solid runs with an occasional pop play. Still want a rookie RB and Dillon would fit a need for short yardage but a more all around back if one slips would be better.
