You'll probably go at them with 1 of each frankly. I guarantee that not both McLeod and Jenkins will be back. Perhaps 1 but not both. Pass-Rusher - The main reason this team wasn’t in the super bowl. Haven’t been able to consistently rush the passer for yours with the front 4. Hoping we can find this in FA and maybe add someone else in the draft. 2.) CB - Lose Ryan and Adoree is entering his 4th season and Butler has a high price tag. Would be nice to add another CB. 3.) K - Lost a few games this season because of a terrible kicking situation 4.) RB2 5.) RT - Don’t know if Kelly can hold it down for a full season. Will need a good swing OT regardless. 6.) QB2 7.) So if I'm looking at it for the Atlanta Falcons, this is what the roster currently looks like factoring in the cap casualties of Allen Bailey, Devonta Freeman, Ty Sambrailo, Matt Schaub, Luke Stocker, as well as the retirement of James Carpenter. Set Starters in bold. Need Areas at the end QB: Matt Ryan, Kurt Benkert, Danny Etling => Needs a backup RB&FB: Ito Smith, Brian Hill, Qadree Ollison, Craig Reynolds => Needs a starter at both RB and FB. Tons of change of pace guys. WR: Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Russell Gage, Olamide Zaccheaus, Christian Blake, Brandon Powell, Devin Gray => a guy to compete as a bigger bodied possession receiver would be nice to have. TE: Jaeden Graham, Carson Meier => Need to re-sign Austin Hooper or this becomes a Tier A need. OL: Jake Matthews, Alex Mack, Chris Lindstrom, Kaleb McGary, Matt Gono, Lukayus McNeil, Jamon Brown, Sean Harlow => Depth here is a huge need. But a starter at LG so that they can avoid starting Matt Gono or Jamon Brown there would be nice. Dan Quinn likes to run interesting personnel groupings on the DL so it leads to three distinct DL Groups: True DTs that play only 0-5T, True DE's that play only 5-9T and hybrid DL that play from 0-7T. DT: Grady Jarrett, Deadrin Senat, Michael Bennett => A true space eating 1T would be great for the Falcons. Jarrett is exceptional, but some help is needed inside. Hybrid DL: John Cominsky, Jacob Tuioti-Mariner => Cominsky has talent, but is raw. A true base DE who can slide to DT in nickel would be nice. DE: Takk McKinley, Austin Larkin => This is a huge need. The Falcons need a true edge rusher to create havoc. It's been a need since Abraham left in 2012. LB: Deion Jones, Foye Oluokun, Ahmad Thomas => getting a new SLB starter to replace Campbell seems like the right move. But it's not of dire importance due to the lack of base usage in today's NFL and Atlanta's potential for big nickel sets with Neal in the box and Kazee at FS in those sets. CB: Desmond Trufant, Kendall Sheffield, Isaiah Oliver, Jordan Miller, C.J. Reavis => depth/long-term starter to eventually replace Trufant would be nice, but that's not a true high-level need right now. S: Keanu Neal, Ricardo Allen, Damontae Kazee, Jamal Carter, Sharrod Neasman, Chris Cooper => Outside of depth guys, this spot is set. ST: K Younghoe Koo (ERFA who has been tendered), LS Josh Harris => Kicker and Punter competition needs to be brought in. No set starter at either spot. IOL: More than likely, specifically center or guard who doesn't require help on a majority of snaps. Kromer's run-blocking scheme, dating all the way back to when he was in New Orleans under Sean Payton, was predicated more on having dominant guards than standout tackles. ILB: Assuming (safely) that Brandon Staley deploys something similar to Vic Fangio's scheme, there's a particular emphasis in that scheme for plus-athleticism ILB's who have sideline-to-sideline range and can get home against the QB up the middle. Currently, we have Corey Littleton who is capable of that, but he's also a UFA and will cost upwards of $10M/yr to bring back. Beyond Littleton, we have Troy Reeder who flashed and started 8 games this past season for us, and appears to have the baseline athleticism to be penciled into the position, but I won't be so naive as to think the coaching staff won't think he's upgradeable. Micah Kiser who we drafted 2 years ago who will certainly be given a shot to compete, but doesn't appear as rangy as desirable. And then Travin Howard who is effectively capped as a ST/depth guy. EDGE: Barring the team taking a stab at a raw(er), ceiling prospect, I don't really see this as a huge need even if Fowler and the Rams part ways, largely because of the new scheme. Yes, Fangio had Mack and Floyd in Chicago, Miller and Chubb in Denver, but the scheme itself tends to call for the OLB's to play the run on way to the pass and for the OLB's to be interchangeable (side-wise, in terms of being able to be the SOLB versus the WOLB on any given play, so as to thwart opposing offenses from being able to make as effective pre-snap adjustments as possible). What we have there right now isn't special, but it's serviceable. Could it be upgraded? Clearly, but ILB (particularly when factoring in scheme) is of stronger importance than OLB. 5-Tech DE: Michael Brockers is being allowed to move on because, relative to the role he'd be asked to play in the new scheme (commanding double-teams and eating blocks), he would have been drastically overpaid for the likely contribution. This is not to say that ability to contribute in pass-rush from the 5-Tech position will be entirely thrown out, but the scheme calls for more of a 2-gap 5-Tech than the 1-Tech variety that Wade Phillips' scheme did. RB: This assumes that Malcolm Brown is released, as the Rams are still technically 4-deep with John Kelly still on the roster. Darrell Henderson likely sees a larger role in 2020, assuming his pass-blocking has improved. Brown could be a cap-casualty, but if the team believes it doesn't need that cap space to fix the OL, I can see a scenario wherein Brown's just allowed to ride out the second/final year of his contract, because when the line was actually healthy and effective, so was he. S: More a depth need, but the John Johnson both coming off a season-ending injury and entering a contract year, it would be wise for us to have a CYA policy in place to go along with Taylor Rapp. The scheme calls for more versatile, utilitarian safeties versus principally deep-third or in-the-box safeties. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
