This is the one that will probably always be the first to spring to mind for me. Just came out of nowhere, huge season, Madden cover...then straight back to the nowhere from whence he came. Jakuvious
Mike Furrey is always one of my favorites for topics like these. Unsuccessful UDFA for the Colts in 2000. Went to the XFL then the Arena League for a couple of years. Was signed by the Rams as a WR after leading the AFL in every receiving stat in 02/03. Injuries and depth issues in the secondary, in particular Michael Hawthorne getting injured, forced Furrey to start at FS for the Rams in 2005, since he had experience playing both sides in the AFL. Led the team in INTs, but was released at the end of the year. Lions signed him to once again play WR, where he had 98 catches in 2006. Had a few middling years after that as a Lion before being signed as a WR by Cleveland in 2009 in an attempt to improve about the worst WR corp you'll ever see. But poor depth and injuries in the secondary again forced him to be moved to DB. Played 11 games, starting 2, at WR in '09, along with 5, starting 2, at DB. Wasn't great at either, but it was Cleveland.
wackywabbit
Micheal Vick certainly has had a career unlike any other. He's kind of back IN the NFL circle and zeitgeist so much that you don't even immediately think this is a guy who was the most exciting/hyped player in the league and then wasn't playing for 2-3 years of his prime because of prison for a heinous crime. Then came back and casually established himself as still pretty good.
Ty21
As far as strange careers go, it doesn’t get a whole lot weirder than snake milker

skywlker32
People are probably sick of hear about it, but Antonio Gates has to be up there. Going from playing basketball in college to one of the top TEs in the NFL is a strange path.
RamblinMan99
Shaun Alexander had a weird career. He was unstoppable from 2000-2005. He was the sole reason Seattle made it to the Super Bowl in 2005. He rushed for 1,800 yards, scored 27 TDs, won MVP, and made the Madden Cover 2 years later. But, from 2006-2008, his career really fell off for some reason and while he had some injuries, it wasn't like he broke his leg or tore his ACL. He went from averaging nothing less than 4 yards a carry throughout the first 6 years of his career to being an outcast that no team in the league wanted to sign. Shaun Alexander honestly could have had the kind of comeback that Adrian Peterson did, but he decided to retire after just 9 seasons in the league. The dude just simply wanted to get paid, and Cleveland didn't think he was serious about playing football, so he left. Nothing out of the ordinary. Art_Vandalay
Brandon Lloyd comes to mind. Spends 13 years in the NFL and the only year he goes over 1000 is when he goes HAM in 2010 and leads the league in receiving with Kyle Orton at QB. Elky
Has there a more cursed and tragic player than Takeo Spikes? Solid, consistent player that was a strong locker room presence, 200 regular season starts over 14 years, but 0 postseason starts. In fact, whenever he left a team they magically reach the playoffs shortly afterwards. Leaves Cincy for Buffalo after 2002, Cincy would make the playoffs just two years later. He spends one season in Philly (2007) and Philly reaches the NFC Championship the following year. Plays in SF from 08-10. When he left, the team hired Jim Harbaugh and the team made the NFC Championship for three straight seasons with a Super Bowl appearance. He finished his career with San Diego, who was rotting with Norv Turner. Spikes retired after the 2012 season, but San Diego made the playoffs in 2013. To make matters worse, the only time Spikes was on a winning team was the 2004 Bills. Edited March 8, 2020 by Elky
