As drd says, even if he takes a little step back - it's still a massive upgrade over what we've had. I wonder if this alters our draft strategy at all. Are we going to be more aggressive now that we've added a big "Win Now" player? Like if a bigger name defensive player starts falling, does EDC bump up dreaming of pairing him with Campbell? Calais is a great fit in many ways, but chief among them is how he'll allow us to ease in our Rookies. Not sure this changes the draft strategy all that much since the defensive line could still use some talent to groom going forward (and another effective starter) but this is a more than solid improvement for the present. While I don’t think it will necessarily alter our draft strategy, I only think that because I thought it was paramount that we came away with either Clowney (elite edge/run stopper with very good pass rushing skills), Calais Campbell (same thing but along the interior), or worst case we signed Gerald McCoy (he offers the needed interior pass rush but doesn’t have the run stopping ability that I’m sure we would ideally covet of our rushers as they’re on their way to the QB.) So with that being the case I always factored one of these moves into our endgame and thus into my perceived draft strategy. Calais Campbell was really the most “Raven” of the above moves to make though as it wouldn’t require overspending their cap to offer a historic contract to sign a player (Clowney) and it wouldn’t require incorporating a less than ideal run defender upfront (McCoy). Campbell offers the best option especially because in this route we don’t give up the chance of obtaining future compensatory picks for losing any of our pending free agents. In terms of draft strategy, I think we were always going to be aggressive. We have a good portion of talent throughout the roster and few LEGIT weaknesses. Thus this team would probably most benefit from a few elite warriors than a collection of 8 very solid selections. If there is a draft to trade up for talent, this is that draft IMO. Whether its trading up I the 1st for Jerry Jeudy as an elite WR prospect to complete our passing attack or trading up in the second round and securing Tyler Biadasz to make sure we have the blockers in place to recoup the benefits of our talented stable of receiving weapons. While this class has many WRs to choose from, with Lamar’s contract window really jumping into focus, we would be doing this team a disservice if we take a Donovan Peoples-Jones for instance and hope he develops into a premier WR. Jeudy is already incredibly pro ready, we can’t afford to take a rookie that will be playing as much catchup as some of these options might require. With a need on dline out of the way (I assume we go back and pick up either Ellis or Peko) I think our front office are dead set on inside linebacker and oline in this draft. If Judon is not traded, I think we will se edge being a pick later in the draft in case we resign McPhee and Ward.
