Joe Thomas on Kirksey via PackersWire

“The respect that I have for Kirko goes beyond just what he is as a player. And I think he’s a fantastic player,” Thomas said. “He’s not your biggest linebacker, but he’s one of the biggest hitters I’ve ever been around. He’s so bright. He’s so smart. He was always the quarterback of that defense. He’s played for Mike Pettine in that defense before, so he’s got incredible familiarity, and I think that was a big reason why they were excited to sign him because they know he’s going to be a great fit.”

“Going through those tough seasons, one win in two years, he was still the guy that was putting in max effort. He was putting in extra time after practice getting guys ready. He was motivated guys on the practice field during times when it would have been really easy to just mail it in,” Thomas said. “He was still going above and beyond. The energy he brought to practices and games was infectious. And it kept that team together in a situation when most teams would have fractured. The Packers should feel extremely lucky.”

Damn Joe, getting me as hyped as it's possible to be about a lower tier FA ILB.

Kirksey is more in the lines of the hit LB, which is needed for this defense. Martinez was more of the Capers finesse LB. Even though Martinez was a tackling machine, look at the quality of those tackles. Many times he went for the ride after the hit. If Kirksey can stay healthy, he will be an upgrade.

You say this based on what evidence?

Watch the film.

I'm happy to do so. Which film helped cement this opinion for you?

Christian Kirksey has played in 73 NFL games. He has 30 Tackles for Loss

Blake Martinez has played in 61 NFL games. He has 29 Tackles for Loss

Christian Kirksey had missed tackle percentages of 15.7% and 26.7% over the last two years.

Blake Martinez had missed tackle percentages of 7.7% and 10.4% over the last two years.

Christian Kirksey allowed 46 and 58 passing yards per game over the last two years.

Blake Martinez allowed 26 and 36 passing yards per game over the last two years.

I agree with your general point about this particular point about Martinez, but your evidence is a little misleading.  Kirksey played in 73 games, but only started 54 while Blake started 57 of his 61 games.  Additionally Blake began playing ~every snap in week 5 of his second year, while Kirksey didn't start until year 3, resulting in more started games where he played a low number of snaps.  I realize this doesn't change the per/game stats, but does paint a bit of a different picture in the TFL category.

Additionally Kirksey only played in 7 and 2 games his last two years, so you'd expect his missed tackle % numbers to have more variance given the smaller sample size.  In 2019 a missed tackle % of 26.7 meant he missed three tackles and made 11 in his first two games.  You'd prefer your MLB not miss any, but 26.7% still looks scarier than it is.

Again, I do agree that the public opinion of Martinez is based almost entirely around what they imagine other LBers to be like.  I also think being a hard hitter as an ILB is probably the singlest most overrated trait of any individiual position in today's NFL.

These two things cannot be repeated enough.
