It’s a bit if an eye opener at the bare minimum. Media told you 2-3% to prevent a mass panic. In reality though even with unofficial cases, 4-5% is the minimum this would settle at. And it’a very possible 10%+ just like SARS. Biologists are the best ones to talk about this with.

The media did what now to prevent what?  Numbers aside the media has and is continuing to fuel panic in most areas.

Tbh I think an argument could be made seasonality is a bad thing here

Because either way we are likely to be coming out of it in May / June

And yes things may spread more slowly over the summer... but very likely that just leads us to not be prepared when the next wave hits in November or December

I’d hope like hell we aren’t that dumb.

That time should be used to procure vents, PPE, beds, and staff.

So why are less than 1% of people who have tested positive in New Rochelle even hospitalized?  One of the few places they are doing widespread testing.

Similar results in the town of Zo in Italy where they tested every resident.

Similar results on Diamond Princess once you account for age profile of the passengers.

Wherever we do widespread testing of a population regardless of symptoms, the results suggest a large number of mild or asymptomatic cases and a CFR below 1%.

Because that would not fit the world is ending narrative!

If only we didnt have so much evidence to the contrary :(

I'm sure Fauci and co. will be shouting from the mountain top, I just worry people will see the low numbers and get distracted by elections and stuff and it wont be as much of a priority as it should and a lot of people will needlessly die next winter

The initial models considered 4 options: drugs, vaccines, mitigation and suppression. Suppression was the only one that offered enough benefit to sufficiently flatten the curve nationally. Suppression + mitigation was the plan going forward, but mitigation alone would not be sufficient per the estimates from the Imperial College COVID-19 study.

The challenge is that even if WI or Madison was doing well enough to rely on mitigation alone, the only way to make it work would be to close borders and create a separate "island" unto themselves with nobody coming in or out. Unfortunately, that's a non-starter in terms of public policy. The US also does not have the contact tracing (Big Brother surveillance) to pull it off like they do in more authoritarian regimes.

I'm all in favor of keeping the FIBs out, but there will be leaks no matter how hard we try.
The scenario you outlined above is exactly why we shouldn't allow interbreeding among Packer fans and Cubs fans. See below:

That's problem.  I was born with a genetic defect that makes me both a Packers fan and a Cubs fan.  I am obviously not very smart.

If my parents had known, they probably would have drown me at birth.

Maryland and Virginia are working well together, along with Washington DC.  Hogan already has converted Fed Ex Field (Redskins stadium) to a testing facility, and has converted MVA emissions stations to "drive thru testing" if you have a referral from your doctor.  He's also ordered the national guard to set up numerous field hospitals in the area.  We are currently under a "stay at home" order which went into effect yesterday at 8 pm.  Hogan also chairs the governor's meetings.

Wait until round 2 when the east coast cities open back up.  Way too many people in this area.

Changed the post to a link to the Wikipedia article.

But yeah, anyone pushing a Washington Times article as a link, should probably be ignored TBH.

I was linking it for the quote you pompous jerk.  That's why I made a Blame China meme off of the direct quote.  Did the man or did the man not say what he said or did Washington Times misquote him?

Jesus, this thread is intolerably unreadable and unpostable with everybody trying to one up everybody.  Get over yourself.

Are those enough links to link to for the quote?  Do you need a Snopes article on whether or not he actually said it?  Do you want a bibliography of all the places quoting him as saying that?

I hate to say it and I hope I am SUPER wrong...but I think the vast majority of people will not care about a potential resurgence post summer (if it went that way) because of their current lock downs.  Really would be a lot of reliance on the hospitals and such to be prepared. You then have to worry about their ability to be and stay prepared.  I have only seen the inner workings of one hospital in my career and they were AWFUL at managing inventory/budget/financial aspects of the hospital.  You also need to prepare for the reality that a lot of front line workers maybe just be over it and pursue new careers (you hope people get inspired and we have an influx) but given what some of these front line staff make...I would bet against that. I fear too many people have short term memories and you will likely be getting a major political shift into the elections come November so focus there could be lost as well.

Not the point of my comment. Not even about the content. Don't care. Just pointing out the source is … problematic. Just hope people would avoid linking to publications like that.
